Diamonds! Diamonds! Diamonds!
Famous for its use in crafting, and its rarity, the diamond is considered one of the most useful items in Minecraft.
It's the second rarest material in the game, after emeralds.
Diamonds make the most durable tools and armor in the game.
They are also the second most efficient, after gold (surprise, surprise!) but gold tools don't have much durability.

Diamonds can only be mined by diamond or iron pickaxes. If you try to mine diamond ore with any other pickaxe, then when you break the diamond ore, it'll drop nothing.

Diamonds are generally found near lava, or very very deep underground. When you mine diamond ore, it usually drops about one diamond. If you use fortune, then it drops multiple. You could use the silk touch enchantment to mine the diamond ore and keep it. Smelting diamond ore... is a waste of coal. Why smelt it... when you can mine it?

As a crafting ingredient, diamonds have a vast range of crafting recipes that they are used in. Which is a reason why diamonds are considered the most valuable items. Diamonds craft all the diamond tools, diamond armor, enchantment tables, jukeboxes, and are used in fireworks for the trail effect. Diamonds may also be crafted into diamond blocks, which can easily be converted back into diamonds.. making it an efficient way of saving space in your storage chests.

Diamonds are essential to mining obsidian, because the only way to mine obsidian is by using a diamond pickaxe.
