It's so close, no more frequent updates or blogs posted about the added items. A lot of commotion was about the update 1.6.6-
-Removed Herobrine
Of course, I read an article that Notch did this out of pure humor and actually removed the human mob. Which I found out the hard way(: Anyways I developed a list of great ideas to add. I doubt any of these would be put in, but they could be a good idea for a mod too! So let your imaginations run wild children!

Flooding
Rain rain go away, come back another day! When it rains, it pours so stay in doors when it rains in Minecraft! No roof? Conclusion leads to a flooded house. It would be an interesting and adventurous addition. In a large hole? Hopefully it doesn't rain while your in there because you'll most likely drown! ;)
Tsunamis
The water retreats and then returns and it keeps coming! Your area will stay flooded for awhile so you probably should make a cabin to return to in case of this natural diaster!
Hurricanes
These horrible diasters usually end in an unhappy way. In Minecraft, watch cows fly as they are sucked up into the heavy winds!
Any more bright ideas? Post them here and maybe if we get lucky, they'll be put into the final version of the game!
