Ethan scratched his brown hair as he gazed out of the train cart, at the wild passing countryside. He, after a day on the same train, was still amazed at the technology of the transport system. In his hometown, Cannondale, there were no holographic Televisions. No cyborg waiters and waitresses, and no food buffets that refilled itself automatically. He felt slightly overwhelmed at the ordeal. The trip to his Uncle Graysono s home in Coltrane, the Capitol city of what used to be North America, was 3 days long even in the Mono rail that traveled at 150 miles an hour. Heo d never met his uncle, nor had his uncle or cousins met him.
Ethan hadno t particularly wanted to go to Coltrane, but at the age of 15 he could no longer stay in the orphanage any longer. Heo d been at the orphanage since he was 3 when his mother and father died in a fire. Ethan vividly remembered the fire, though it was 12 years ago. Heo d been barely alive when the firemen had pulled him out of the burning estate of Martha and Benjamin McKinnon.
About three hours later a woman entered his car. Not a machine person, but a woman with blonde hair and stout blue eyes. She appeared to Ethan to be in her 20o s.
o Evening sir, my name is Alana, could I get you anything?o She asked. Ethan wasno t hungry, or thirsty for that matter.
o No thanks.o Ethan replied softly. o But would you happen to know the time?o
o Yes, sir, it is 13:06, July 19, 2418.o She replied politely. o We will arrive in Coltrane in about 6 hours. Will that be all sir?o
o Yes thank you.o Ethan answered and Alana left the car.
Ethan strode out of the car to the front of the train. He just wanted to get there already. As the day progressed and three hours passed, Ethan became hungry. He walked a couple cars forward, past a few other passengers, and into a dining car. The luxurious cart was filled with booths and bars. Ethan sat down at a booth and waited. A couple minutes later a robotic waitress approached him.
o Good evening, sir.o The droid said in a robotic voice. She shifted and a holograph appeared from what would have been her stomach had she been human. Ethan watched the holograph pop out. A menu was on the screen. Ethan punched in a few options and the robot left. Ethan waited. He drifted into a deep sleep.
