Hello there planet minecraft. If you have ever played on a server which allows griefing/stealing, which many servers do, you know the troubles/difficulty of trying to hide your chests from griefers, raiders, and the worst, X-ray users.
Well, I have created this blog to (hopefully) help people out by giving all the many ways to hide your chests that I can think of. OK I'm not going to lie here. I have used the x-ray mod before. It was only for about a week, but yes I have used it. And it really is surprising how little effort many people give to protect their stuff. These people are the same people who wind up raging that all of their stuff is gone. But anyway, I will rate the ways with a description and on a scale of 1 to 10. Also, remember that many servers have factions, which can protect your stuff- to a point. Some of these ideas are also ideas for faction home protection as well. If anyone has any ideas, please tell me and I will get to putting them up ASAP. Let's get started.

1 = worst
10=best

Defensive/Hiding

Pros:
  • Can be used indefinitely, does not have to be re-set up
  • Many can be done fairly early in the game
  • Work well for factions
  • Some are almost 100% effective
  • If done well, Griefers/X-rayers can be completely oblivious to your location

Cons:
  • Effectiveness depends upon the user's ability to hide/disguise their home
  • Most require the user to make their home underground or hidden
  • Some are completely noneffective against X-ray
  • Not for people who like to strike back against griefers.

A. Placing a sign in front of your chest that says something, possibly comical, along the lines of "please do not steal". Ok. If you are very, very lazy and don't even attempt to hide your stuff, this can be one method that will work maybe .001% of the time. The only way this could stop a potential chest raider is if they are nice and decide to take heart to your message. Don't try this method unless you are incredibly, incredibly lazy.
RATING: 1
  1. Note: Why are you even trying this?????

B. Living underground and hiding your chests behind blocks such as dirt, gravel, or sand. This method will work. sometimes. While this method will easily be brushed past by the x-ray mod, it can be particularly effective against the average griefer/raider. However, when using this tip don't make it obvious where the chests are, like having 1-2 dirt with all stone around it. try to have a bunch of the block to make it look like an average underground group of dirt or gravel.

C. For Factions! Surrounding your faction home with obsidian. This is probably one of the more well-known tactics for protecting your faction and also your chests. If you are using this method, then likely you are not trying to hide your chests, but protect them inside your faction home. Be warned, some plugins make it so that obsidian CAN be destroyed by TNT by giving it a much lower blast protection. also, actually getting all the obsidian to surround an entire house can be very hard, and an efficiency 4 pickaxe is recommonded to speed up the process. Finally, you need to make sure that your faction is powerful enough to keep the land it is in protected so raiders cannot just claim your land over you, thus making your defense useless. So, while effective, some servers make this tactic unhelpful by making the blast protection for obsidian much,much lower than it normally is.

D. Hiding your chest inside a vein of coal. This, while tricky to pull off, is one of the most effective ways to stop those nasty x-rayers. One way to do this is by using a silk touch pickaxe to mine out coal ore and then placing your chest in the middle of the vein and replacing the coal ore. However, this requires the silk touch enchantment which can sometimes be very difficult to get. Also, if silk touch is unavailable you can place your chest right under a coal ore vein at a very low level, i.e. 10 or below. At that level, first off a raider is very unlikely to be looking for coal, but also it is unlikely that the person will be under the vein of coal at such a low y-axis.

E. Hiding your chest in a vein of iron ore. This tactic is one of the easiest to complete and requires very little effort, which makes it fairly popular. However, this idea is not the greatest since while it is easy to get enough iron ore to hide your chest effectively and silk touch is not required, it can be fairly obvious that there is a chest behind the iron ore if there is an abnormal amount of iron ore in one spot (usually bigger than 12 is suspicious). So, while easy and sometimes effective, this is not the greatest strategy but still a good one.

F. For Factions! disguising your house as an underground lava lake. This is probably one of the less well known methods, but definitely one of the best. Not only will this work to protect your chests, it can also keep your faction house off the radar and completely unnoticed. In addition, this tactic can be completed with relative ease. All you need is a bucket, a good starting point and an idea of what the typical lava lake looks like. Normally this should be done around level 12, which is where natural lava lakes start to appear. First for this tactic, you want to make a house. Don't make it out of wood or anything that burns. Actually, you can make the house out of glass if you want. That would be both stylish and protective. Second, surround the house 100% in lava. At the top, it should look flat, or not flowing, since regular lava lakes are usually not flowing at the top. The only problem with this tactic is if the server you play on does not have the /home command. If so, getting in/ out of your house might be a problem. However, if /home is available, this is an almost foolproof tactic that can protect your chests all the time, every time.
RATING: 9.5

G. For Factions! Have water flowing down the walls of your faction home. Since TNT will not cause block damage in water, surrounding your faction home with water can 100% stop TNT cannons, thus making your faction home unstoppable. Also, you do not need to collect any obsidian to make this work, just have an infinite water source and a bucket handy. As long as you are strong enough to keep your claimed land protected, this tactic can keep your faction at the top of the list and keep your chests safe.
RATING: 9.5

H. Using false (junk) chests and having a rare stuff chest in a hidden location. This method is decent. While some raiders might be satisfied to stop their search for your goodies after finding one of your chests (even if it does just have bad stuff), some x-rayers could use their nasty little eyes for picking out your rare stuff chest. So, this tactic is another fairly easy one but still a very nice one against the non x-raying chest raiders.

I. User Submission! Living in an abandoned Mine shaft. Once you find this, make a part of it your house and block it off with gravel. Put your stuff under the gravel and put junk in the chests naturally occurring in the Mine Shaft. I tested this idea on a hardcore griefing server, and it stood up to the test surprisingly well. I had my doubts but this tactic is fairly easy and very effective.

J. Simply Hiding your dwelling or chests area with smooth stone. Obviously this tactic will not defer X-rayers, but can be very useful against chest-stealers. Smooth stone is fairly easy to obtain, as you can get 8 per piece of coal in a furnace (cook 1 cobblestone to get 1 smooth stone). You can also get smooth stone with a silk touch pick. Normally, cobblestone is the sure sign of another player (except for dungeons, durr) because when you mine stone, it turns into cobble so you can tell if there is cobblestone all around that another player has been in this area or is still here. If you cover-up your house with some nice smooth stone, especially if you give the outside a nice natural cave-y look, it can just look like another wall or a dead end in a cave.

Offensive/Setting up Traps
B. User Submission! Create a trapped chest. First, you need to make a trapped chest and link it to some TNT or other redstone - influenced trap. Then, put a sign overhead that says something like "diamonds" or "rare stuff" or "enchanted" or something like that to draw in the unwary griefer. When they try to open the chest - well, you know. They die (or at least they should if you set it up right). Overall, I would say this tactic is both funny and pretty useful. Drawbacks are that most of the time this will only work once (see note) before being reset. Also, an X-ray user could see redstone or TNT connected to the fake chest and stay away. However, if you want to LOL at some griefers failing to take your stuff, this is one for you.
  1. NOTE: if you use TNT, make sure not to grief your own house in the process.
  2. NOTE: One way to do this tactic is to make the chest connected to a sort of trap door with pistons that opens up into a death-by-falling pit or a death-by-lava pit. With this change instead of using TNT this trap can be used over and over without needing to make more TNT or set it up again.
    RATING: 7 (8 if you connect to pistons for a pit)

I will be sure to come up with more ideas soon, but for now, this is it. Have fun and watch for those x-rayers!

With the trapped chest idea, another thing you could do is connect it up to pistons that pull the floor away from under whoever is attempting to steal stuff and drop them into a pit of lava, cacti (or both) or other similar damaging blocks

Have you ever heard of someone who used X-ray to look for coal instead of gold, diamonds, emerald, your chests, etc?

I know an awesome one. I used it on a supreme raid server, and they never found it. What you do is find an abandoned mineshaft and make it your house and block it up with gravel. then put the stuff under the gravel and put some dirt/junk in the real mineshaft chest. It works 99.9999999% of the time
