Do Graphics Matter?

Intro

Hello there, it's OnlyIn5D and I always thought to myself, do graphics matter? I mean, does it matter how good or how bad the graphics are in the game that you are playing? well to be honest, yes they do, people don't like bad graphics, but you have to look at it from a different perspective, you have to look at it from every perspective possible.

The Way Graphics Impact Us

The Graphics of a game in theory shows the quality of the game, the point in time at which the game was made could be reflected off of the graphics, but then why are some games popular without good graphics? Well it depends on the game, a realistic shooter needs to look good, it needs to look good because the better it looks, the better experience the player gets. This is why people who play shooting games, tend to get mad at people playing games that actually have bad graphics. So we use graphics to judge, and thats simply how it will stay.

A Graphics style

Now unlike shooters, not all games have to have good graphics, choosing to use plain graphics could be purposeful and something that could potentially make the game better. Now we all know that if you add bad graphics to call of duty games, people will hate it. But using special textures to make your game look weird gives the player the effect of what you make the graphics to be. So its not really about having good graphics is it? Its about making the right graphics, for the right game.

Who are you to hate?

I personally don't know why people even judge graphics, I mean, lets take Pokemon, a classic game that so many people play its unbelievable, do any of them care that the game they are playing is all pixelated and weird, No! None of them care at all about the look of the game, they all love the concept, and that is what matters. So who are you to hate on a game if the concept is the only thing that is what makes it good? Here is a challenge, never judge the graphics of a game again until you think about the concept and how many people play it and how well made it is made.

Imagine

Imagine pacman being a super realistic game where the walls are made out of not one colour, but a variety that make the walls look like realistic walls, and image that pacman himself is this super well textured piece of cheese... strange right? Well now apply that thought to every game you know does not have ultra realistic graphics and you will see what I am talking about. So don't judge a game for graphics until you think about what it would look like with realistic graphics and whether it would have the same feel to it.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a game that is most commonly hated for 'bad' graphics. The blocks are textured with pixels from 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, 128x128 and 256x256, and people think this is bad graphics, which for a simulator sandbox, they kind of are. Now now now, lets remember the Graphics style, mine craft graphics are a style of graphics, they are purposefully pixelated because that is how notch (the creator of mine craft) intended the game to be. We could sit here and talk all day about minecraft and its 'way' of graphics, but it was purposeful, and that is all that matters.

Don't get me wrong

Now don't get the wrong idea, I do not think that all games have great graphics, this is not true. The are many games out there that could use a lot of work on their graphics, and I mean a lot for work! this usually includes simulators and flash games. Don't get me wrong again, not all flash games have bad graphics, in honesty the majority of them have strange textures to replace good textures that a website game would not be able to handle.

Conclusion

Games are all different, so their appearance should be different as well. Look at the concept of a game and not the look of it. Besides, accepting the look of someone's hard work is something that we should all learn to do one day.

So don't judge a game by it's graphics, because they might not be bad graphics at all

It's just a blog for people who don't like a game because of it's graphics. If you read the intro I think it pretty much explains it...

While gamers everywhere probably agree with you, Owen, there are still many people who decide on a game based solely on their graphics (Won't lie, this has happened to me once or twice).

Unfortunately, many people pick up a game based on the graphics. Take, for example, Oblivion, from the Elder Scrolls series. It's old and the graphics are a less than stellar compared to all of the new-fangled games we have today. Because of this small little detail, I have had many friends refuse to play it. This results in a great many face-palms at my expense because it really was a great game and was what got me into gaming.

There are probably hundreds of games that fit into that category (I don't really have the time to test that theory), and, sadly, will continually pile up as gaming companies up their graphics and give less regard to the gameplay.

All-in-all, solid blog, OnlyIn5DYT.

thanks, I may delete it though. It seems it slowly got 10 diamonds over the course of 2 months and that is quite a long time for such a small amount of 'likes'.
