Chapter 3

As I lay awake in my bed, I thought about what happened at the bakery. How come someone would be so cruel to murder a kind man? The pastries there are very cheap, and it never gets busy, meaning he had very little money at that moment. I fiddled with a loose string on the end of my shirt. A knock on the door gave me a start.

"Hello? Zack, are you awake?" said Lindsey, my sister.

"Sigh. Yeah, what is it." I groaned.

She pursed her lips. And then moved her mouth, though no words came out, as if she lost her vocal chords. She looked shocked, as if she saw a ghost.

"You alright sis? Why are you so pale? Are you cold?" I said softly, only to get a shake of her head.

She scampered over to my bedside, and sat down, "I... I think I saw someone outside, and something was shiny in his hands. I'm scared, what if mommy comes home and finds him?" She cried.

I gave her a sideways glance, and groped for my sword. As I found the hilt, I told Lindsey to stay in my room, where there were no windows.

"But you can't go out there! You'll get killed! How do you think momma will feel?!" She sobbed.

With a shrug, I stalked out of the room to barricade all openings, and then I saw him.

"Hey! Get out of here you street rat! Go rob someone else!" I shouted.

No response, just a quick movement of the hand, and before I know it, two daggers were soaring their way to my heart. With natural reflexes, I sidestepped, and charged the thief. While in mid-swing, the man unhooded himself, showing a face. A face that didn't deserve to be destroyed.

"Wh-What are you doing here! Go home!" I hollered.

"You don't understand! I don't HAVE a home!" Said the thief.

"Well, what did you expect? You could try killing me and disguise yourself as a boy two inches taller than you?!" I fired back.

As the shouting continued, Lindsey appeared out of nowhere.

"By the way, Zack. Lucas here is hiding a knife behind his back."
