Coming up with a title is hard...

Anyway, hello and welcome Crafters to another blog that I hope will come out interesting to somebody. Too many times I have opened this screen, put it down, deleted it, and started fresh. It has been quite some time since I wrote a Blog and another that I'm writing about something that probably has been discussed in depth by hundreds, if not thousands, of other players. While not trying to be the first, I always try to do my best and here is where I will make my stand once again.

Alpha One and Done

As you might see from my profile, I have quite a bit of time spent in the earlier versions of the game. Is it because I thought they were better? Do I hate fun and creativity? Maybe I have my rose-tinted glasses on too tight to see the majesty of the current era of the game to realize how fantastic it is.

Well, the short answer is a little of colum A, a little of column B, and a sprinkling of nostalgia. The real answer is my extraordinary powerful OCD that would not let me sleep until I've played and beaten the version I have started on. After a year and change, I finally managed to with results and memories to share. My opinion on the version hasn't changed that much and I still found it fun enough to spend a few hours a day playing, hoping to go back whenever I get a chance again.

After blowing it all up, I took a look back at how I really feel about it as a whole. It was fun, sure, but it had its share of problems. Glitches, lack of direction, not much to do other than mine and survive. It probably would not have been better with a second player, but I still enjoyed my time enough and had plenty of project ideas that I should have followed through with.

If I had to rank it out of 10, I would probably give it a 4. The lack of blocks and options really made this just a basic lego set that would keep most children occupied for a few hours.

With it out of the way finally, I was not sure if I should go into Beta 1.0, Beta 1.7.3, or jump into current era Minecraft.

Why not 1.0? I had already beaten it a while ago.

One day, I decided that goingo into the "Greatest Version Ever" was probably going to be my best choice as many proclaim that it is the Definitive Minecraft Game. Or so it has been said on forums, YouTube, and by a few of my friends. The terrain generation, the exploration, and the community were at their peak at the time right before The Split which I won't discuss here.

Anyway, now that I had settled on the game, what were going to be the rules? Changing it up from my Alpha challenges, I am deciding on just doing the Acievements and possibly doing another 100% run. Not sure if I will do the latter as that took far too long to do last time and this one will be slightly more annoying to do. As well as that, not sure what I would be doing that for other than my own ego.

Once again, it is time to dive right on in to see the wonderful world that, while I had played a bit back in the day, I missed out on due to starting to get bored of the game in general.

Beta Believe It

So, my first steps into the game, how do I feel about it? Quite good, actually. One of the many things that I disliked about, and still continue to groan, is the bed. Introduced in early Beta, it pretty much eliminated the danger of The Night by providing an easy way out of a dangerous situation. It nullified the challenge by creating a solution that was not needed.

Mostly.

If you know anything about old Minecraft or video games in general, beds didn't come out exactly as intended and have a couple glitches of their own. Namely, sometimes you would get "Nightmares" which, as I have come to find out, means you either went to sleep underground, in the open, too close to a wall, or if you so happen to go to sleep while monsters were nearby (this one I found out on accident after running home late one night).

Once you get a nightmare, it is practically impossible to go back to sleep or more mobs will constantly show up. This results in you having to wait out the whole night regardless. I personally wished they had worked it a little in modern Minecraft, but I don't think it would have worked out oo well given how the spawning rules were back in the day and transparency was also a major issue.

Another feature that I am ecstatic about were the changes to armor and tool durability. No longer was I going through stone picks and iron armor like water, they actually prove effective when dealing with the many creatures of the Darkness. I will not miss that from Alpha any time soon, even if I gave them the benefit of seeing the bast in beautiful Technicolor.

Also, no, I have not tamed a wolf yet. Working on it, but they spawn rarely and require quite a few bones to get them. I don't know what the number is at the moment, but I'm going to see if I can get a stack or two before I try.

Final Thoughts

What are my current thoughts on Beta as of writing this?

Quite a few and most of them good, a couple bad. Just like any other form of entertainemt, it's very rare you are going to find your personal Ten outta Ten video game, movie or TV show, but this is definitely moving up for my personal scale to a solid 8. The game makes a lot of general improvements towards a more Sandbox-like feel that was what most people loved Minecraft for.

I have been on a quest to find my Fun in video games, let alone Minecraft, after being burnt out since early Full Release. Going back to these old versions to play and analyze them just the way I used to, pushing myself into interacting with as much of the game as possible, I've become less forced and now find myself willingly logging back in every few days to do something or just enjoy my time.

As much as I adored my time in Alpha, it cannot be said that Beta was not an improvement to the game overall. usually, there are many discussions about what is "Better" of the two. Most of these revolve around treating subjective matter as objective, confusing the two of personal taste to direct hardware changes.

Here, however, Beta is objectively a better experience overall for the player with its changes, even if I don't agree with all of them. More uses out of tools, bigger areas, cleaner textures, and new blocks give the player options for each of their playthroughs. In addition to those is the Seed Generator which can provide you with countless worlds to explore alone or with friends. I hope to go check them out, my current world has it as Blank to keep it as close to Vanilla and out-of-the-box as possible.

Finally, with this out of the way, I can finally go back to tend to my World and get that stupid Minecart achievement that's been driving me up the wall for the pas month.
