Four days on, and we were starved.

The tundra seemed to stretch forever on, and neither me nor Grace could figure out which direction we were going.

“I swear we’ve passed this rock before,” I remarked.

“I swear we’ve seen it twice,” said Grace.

Eventually, we became so hungry, we were delirious.

I can’t remember it all now, but I think I spent a whole day dancing on an icy river.

That night, our flint and steel gave out.

“Well,” Grace said sarcastically, “we’re doomed.”

“We could mine,” I said.

“No shovel, no pick axe. And I haven’t seen a tree since the igloo.”

Grace walked away from our camp, toward a massive pillar of ice.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Praying.”

This was a side of Grace I had never seen. The first rider of the Emperial legion, praying to pagan gods of this foreign land.

“Oh Ender-men!” She hummed. “You do not know me, but my name is Grace. I am in an hour of darkness! Death is near! I…” her voice cracked, “I need to see my family again. Please, I beg you, help me.”

From inside the ice, I saw a puff of purple.

Then, behind me came a dark, tall thing.

It held a bale of hay in its grasp. It dropped it.

“Thanks,” Grace murmured.

We were both careful not to stare at it.

Then, the Ender-man dropped a pearl into my hands.

“.ti worhT” it said, and it walked back into the night.

I felt the pearl, and then dropped it. It skittered off a hill.

Suddenly, I was where the pearl was and the pearl was gone.

“This hay will keep us fed,” Grace said.

“And the pearl… we have one from the other Ender-man, right?” I said, “we can throw it, far off into the distance, and hopefully get out of this place.”
