📖PROLOGUE:

One day Nick came home from school. He had nothing to do on this day so he opened his laptop and started minecraft. But what he didn't know is that this game session would become different, longer and even scarier than he thought. Let me tell you why...

📖CHAPTER 1:

Nick really liked playing Minecraft. He had never been into other games, because Minecraft already gave him everything he wanted. He did all kinds of things in the game and loved being creative. Nick often played with other people—some he knew in real life, others he didn’t. He saw himself as just one of many Minecraft players around the world and was proud to be part of the huge community.
But now, let’s look at what happened to Nick on this day:

After starting Minecraft (which always took a while on his old laptop), he joined the server that he and his friends had been playing on a lot recently. It was a survival server where everyone could do whatever they wanted. The server was pretty big, so he would always meet at least a few people. His in-game name was “cave_gamer2011”—probably one of the most boring usernames in all of Minecraft. On the server, everyone was called by their in-game name, which Nick thought was really cool. When he joined, 11 people were online—most of them students who had just gotten home from school.

When someone joins their server, there are at least a few people who immediately say hi. Cave_gamer always felt very comfortable on this server, but what he didn't know was that this was going to change very soon...
In the last few days, cave_gamer had been building his house. He had imagined a beautiful medieval house, but as usual, it didn’t turn out exactly how he wanted. Still, he was already pretty far along and would probably finish it today. A few players joined him and watched while he kept building, so he spent the first hour of his afternoon working on it. Then he was finally done! “Not bad at all!” cave_gamer thought. The other players seemed to like it too.

Compared to the other houses on the server, his actually looked really good, and he was pretty proud of it. His house had a pointed roof made of deepslate bricks, and on the outside he had used some spruce logs, calcite, and oak leaves. Now it was time to work on the interior, but first he needed a bit more wood, so he headed off to the nearest forest and… it happened all of a sudden, out of nowhere. There was no clear reason for it. Everything suddenly started lagging really badly. Cave_gamer’s FPS dropped hard, and he kept getting teleported back to where he had just been. He couldn’t do anything about it. The lag had him completely stuck and wouldn’t let him do anything. He wondered if the others were having the same problem, but no one was saying anything in the chat. Cave_gamer wasn’t sure if nobody was typing (which would be pretty strange for this server) or if the messages just weren’t going through.

<cave_gamer2011> oh wow what's that?

He typed out the message and tried to send it, but even he couldn’t get it through. He tried again. And again. And again. Then he gave up. So he logged out and back in, not really expecting it to help. But suddenly, as if nothing had happened, the lag was gone. He could receive chat messages again too. But it didn’t seem like anyone was talking about the lag from just a moment ago.

<cave_gamer2011> Did you just see that?
<mcKevin> what?
<goldenTiger> What do you mean?
<cave_gamer2011> The lag of course
<goldenTiger> There was no lag bro what do you mean
<mcKevin> there was no lag for me
<frostyfrost> no
<cave_gamer2011> I swear there was horrible lag


But it seemed as if no one else had experienced this lag. Suddenly, cave_gamer felt strangely alone. It was as if he was no longer part of the server. As if he had somehow become… different. And he didn’t want to be that way.

But whatever, he thought, took a deep breath, and got to work setting up his house. Towards the evening, the server became more and more crowded. The mood was cheerful—just the way cave_gamer liked it. He chatted with all sorts of players on the server (all very nice people, even though he hardly knew any of them in real life).
Then, at 7 p.m., Nick’s parents called him for dinner.
“Right now? Does it have to be now?” he thought, but he got up anyway. He figured he could easily leave his Minecraft running in the meantime.
While eating with his parents—barely paying attention to what they were telling him—the memory of the strange lag from earlier came back to him. He had never experienced anything like it. Nick had often had lag before, but usually the entire server was affected. Even those with good PCs.
Was it his internet connection? Or—
“Nick, are you there?”
His mother had apparently asked him something.
“Uh, yeah, sorry. What did you say? I wasn’t paying attention for a moment,” Nick admitted.
“How school was today!” she replied.
“Yeah, it was okay,” he answered briefly, “but can I please go back upstairs? I still have something to do.”
And since his mother probably didn’t feel like arguing with Nick about his screen time—as she often did—she allowed it.
He sprinted back to his room, sat down at his desk, and moved the mouse to wake up his screen.
And froze.
Nick had been logged out of the server.
He stared at the Minecraft dirt background and saw this:

Connection lost
You are banned from this server.
Reason: cave_gamer2011 is already online.

(Nick and cave_gamer2011 are the same person. In minecraft I call him cave_gamer2011 and in the real world Nick. I hope you understood this.)
I hope you enjoyed my story so far. I don't know when the next chapter will be fished, but I'm working on it.
