This is coming from a server owner so many of my views are from an owners perspective. Remember being a staff member is no easy thing. You have to make sure the rules are followed and will likely get hated on for this.
We'll start with a server that just opened and the owner is looking for Moderators.
1st way to become a Moderator
What the owner doesn't want to see:
"Hello I'm from PMC, I need OP to test your server" Seriously, you guys still try this? For those who don't know here is the official PMC staff list www.planetminecraft.com/team
"I want to be mod I'm a good mod with lots of experience" If a owner sees this your chances of actually getting a staff rank has just disappeared.
There's more but I'm having a brain fart right now.
What an owner want's to see.
"Hi, I would like to apply for Moderator" Notice how I said I would like to apply.
Again brain farting, I'll update this when I can remember things.
2nd way to become a Moderator
Alright so let's say you found a forum post with the owner asking for apps. Well the number one thing I can say for this is BE HONEST! (This is handy with job apps to :P)
What a owner doesn't want to see.
Rank applying for:Mod/Admin/CoOwner/OP
Skype(Y/N):Y XXMINECRAFTERXX
Why you should be this rank: Because I have a lot of experience
Past experience: Lots like I've been OP 1000 times
How much time can you dedicate: A lot
Anything else: I'm a good staff member
What an owner want's to see.
Rank applying for: Moderator or Admin
Skype(Y/N):Y
Why you should be this rank: I would like to help your server grow etc etc
Past experience: I have been a Moderator twice and an Admin once
How much time can you dedicate: I can dedicate a few hours a day
Anything else: I do have to (Insert activity here) after (Insert school/work/anything here)
Alright let's say your app gets denied. Well don't give up! Play on the server, get involved in the community. Follow the rules, have some fun. These things will get you noticed by the owner. After about a month (Yes a month I myself hate seeing another app after a week of the first one) submit a new app.
What it's like
Congratulations! Well maybe. If you did get accepted welcome to staff world! I hope you enjoy your stay! Be prepared you are now a Moderator. This is an important job. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure the rules are followed. As stated above, this is not an easy job. You usually have to put your fun server time last to make sure the rules are followed. So here's the actual catch of being a Moderator. You pretty much have to say good-bye to your faction/town/builds as now you have to make sure the rules are followed.(Seeing a trend with the whole making sure the rules are followed?)
Be prepared to get hated on. Here are some things I've heard when I moderated servers.
"Dude, you are such a jerk. All we were doing was joking around and you come in and mute us! (Enter swearword here)"
"Dude I was flying because walking takes too long! I will report you to the owner and tell him what a (Swearword here) you are!"
"OMG U SUCK GO DIE IN A HOLE!"

However you must ignore that and keep going!
Now on how to be a good staff member. First of all, be nice andparticipatein the community. Not everyone hates on staff, in fact, some actually appreciate it! Second, know when to punish people. If the server you are Moderating has a minimal swear rule, don't mute people on their first swear word! Third, remember you're still a player you have to abide by the rules yourself!
After awhile you might get promoted to Admin. When you are a Admin, don't change. Act the same way as if you were a normal player. After all, you are a player. Just a player with actualresponsibility.
(Btw this is what I imagine it's like being a PMC mod as well. <3 you guys!)
