Chapter one (1) – Setting up a bukkit server at home

Step one: Turn/log on to the computer you wish to have your server running on. Remember the computer must be powered on for the server to run, so desktops are ideal.

Step two: Go to bukkit.org and click on “Get craft bukkit” at the top, or click the fallowing link to download Bukkit. http://dl.bukkit.org/latest-rb/craftbukkit.jar

Step three: Once you have downloaded the .jar file place it in the directory (folder) you would like the server to run from.

Step four: Open a text editor (Notepad++ recommended). http://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad-plus/files/latest/download

Step five: Type or copy this in the text editor (Exactly):

java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar craftbukkit.jar -o true

PAUSE

Step six: Save the document as run.bat (not as a .txt) in the same directory (folder) as the craftbukkit.jar you downloaded in step two.

Step seven: Double click run.bat and your server will open and run. To get the IP of your server go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and it will show you.

“If you see "'Java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." then you need to reinstall Java. Still get this error? Follow this guide to adding Java to your system path.” (Craftbukkit) http://www.java.com/en/download/help/path.xml

*NOTE* Folders such as Plugins, Worlds, and other text documents should appear in the folder shortly after starting the server. You will need these for configuring your server don’t delete them!

For installing/configuring plugins and more customization go to chapter 3.

Chapter 2 - Setting up a vanilla server & Updating your minecraft server - click to reveal
Chapter two (2) – Setting up a vanilla server/Updating your server
*NOTE* This section no longer works. It will be updated soon!

Step one: Go to minecraft.net/download and click on the Minecraft_Server.exe or click this link: https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftDownload/launcher/Minecraft_Server.exe

Step two: Place the .exe in a safe place and run the file. Your Minecraft server will start and open.

Step three: Double click run.bat and your server will open and run. To get the IP of your server go to www.whatismyip.com/ and it will show you.

Step four: Have fun on your new Minecraft server!

Updating your server:

Bukkit:

Step one: Download the new Craftbukkit.jar at bukkit.org and replace it with the old CraftBukkit.jar.

Step two: Restart your server.

Step three: Update the necessary plugins (refer to the bottom of chapter 3).

Vanilla:

Step one: Download the new Minecraft_server.jar at minecraft.net/downloads.

Step two: Replace it with the old Minecraft.jar.

Chapter 3 - Installing & Configuring plugins for bukkit servers - click to reveal
Chapter three (3) – Installing/Configuring plugins

Step one: Go to bukkit.org and click “Get plugins” at the top of the page.

Step two: Search for the plugin you would like, click on it. It should open up the plugins page, click on the link to download the plugin.

Step three: Place the plugin in the plugins folder (located in the folder you placed the Craftbukkit.jar & batch file).

Step four: Restart/Run your server and the plugin should be good to go!

*NOTE* Make sure the plugins you are downloading are up to date! If the plugins are not made for the current version of Minecraft they most likely will not work!

Configuring plugins:

Step one: Download Notepad++ or any text editor.

Step two: Open the folder the plugin has created and right click on the file you would like to edit.

Step three: Open the file with the text editor and make the changes you would like!

*NOTE* Most plugins tell you how to edit them but that’s not always the case. For editing many parts of a plugin it will have True or False. False is equivalent to No and True is equivalent to Yes. For other aspects you might just delete something, add something, or change the text. Warning: Make sure the text is supposed to be changeable, or you could easily ruin the plugin configuration. To fix delete the file and it will regenerate after restarting the server.

Updating plugins:

Sometimes you won’t need to update the plugins but most of the time you will. To update the plugin delete the plugin.jar (Not the folder) and download the new one to replace the old one.

Chapter 5 -  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)  - click to reveal
Chapter five (5) – FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

Q: What is the difference between a professional host and hosting on a home computer?

A: A professional host is more reliable and will keep your server up 24/7 while at home your server can easily get turned off. In addition, a server on a home computer can take up a lot of your computer’s memory.

Q: How much does a professional host cost?

A: A hosting service can cost anywhere from $5 a month to $500 a month depending on how much RAM you want. I recommend CraftNodeHosting (Craftnodehosting.com).

Q: What’s the difference between Bukkit and Vanilla?

A: Bukkit is made for customization. You can add plugins that completely change the game of Minecraft on a bukkit server while a Vanilla server is just plain old Minecraft.

Q: How do you set up a server with a professional host?

A: Go to their website and it should tell you. Most of the time you just order the server and they will send you an email with all of the server information.

Maybe a hint to make this easier to read. Put the single pages into spoilers so you can directly jump into them. Do a little formatting. Do a bar or something between the pages and so on. Just put a little more effort into the Blog writing.

Even if there already are 1500 "how to setup a minecraft server" tutorials, this one gives a good overview. Expand it!
