The art of YouTube is an amazing one, but very difficult to learn. If you want to become popular, you have to give a lot of time and effort to your computer. Why an inanimate object? Because. A computer can change a video from being a complete piece of crap, to the most amazing thing in the world. Probably not the most amazing thing, though; the video would have to be somewhat decent beforehand... never mind, you're not listening. THE POINT IS, you can't just record something on your webcam and upload it to YouTube with no editing. So here's some tips for making a good and awesome YouTube vid. Get ready for a lot of reading.

GETTING STARTED

So, you have an idea for a YouTube video. If you want to become popular, the first step is to upload a video about something pretty new. Like if you want to make a parody, if you're not already popular, you can't choose an old song to make a parody of. You have to choose a new song, so people have a better chance of seeing it. This doesn't matter though as long as you're doing it for fun, which is the reason most of my videos are made. I WANT to do it, with no hope people are going to actually see it. And so far I have 30 something subscribers... but that's a big deal for me because I never get more than 5 on anything. (doesn't it make you mad when you spend time to make quality videos, but no one gives a crap and a video that looks like it was made by a 5 year old gets a million more views than you? Welcome to YouTube.) But anyways, just remember, because you make a quality video, doesn't mean you're going to become viral. You should be happy you're videos are awesome! (and not like RayWilliamJohnson. I'm going to get hate, but seriously! He's KIND OF funny, I'll admit, but he shouldn't be the most subscribed channel! Smosh or Nigahiga deserve that spot.) And for your videos to be awesome, you need to have an AWESOME idea, and have AWESOME editing done. But we'll get to that later. If you want to become popular, music and comedy are the easiest ways. There are 6 VEVO channels on the top 50 list of the most subscribed channels (as of October 3rd, 2012: One Direction, LMFAO, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Eminem, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber. WAIT? JB? O_o) and a couple other music channels on the list that don't say VEVO in the name, but probably are uploading music videos. Take a look at the list to see. And then RayWilliamJohnson, NigaHiga (second most subscribed channel), Smosh (third most subscribed channel), machinima (fourth most subscribed channel), and much more have videos based around comedy. RayWilliamJohnson is more of a blog and machinima is a gaming channel, but they all have at least some videos that are comedy. So, here's your equation. Popularity= comedy, music, or gaming WITH comedy. (examples of gaming with comedy: CaptainSparklez, BlueXephos, TobyGames, etc. And all of these are on the top 50 list.) If you're not doing it for popularity, go ahead and upload whatever the heck you want. I would advise you to do things more because you want to, since YouTube can be the most aggravating thing you've ever known. Where uploading because you've wanted to has gone wrong: REBECCA BLACK. (she never meant for more than 5 people to see it, FYI) SO MAKE SURE YOUR IDEA ISN'T TERRIBLE.

MAKING THE VIDEO

EDITING SOFTWARES

You've got your idea, now what? Duh. You. Make. The. Video. It doesn't matter whether your recording the video with a camera, with a recording software for your computer or TV, or making the video on an editing software, you NEED an editing software. If you are using any type of recording device, then you will learn more about editing in the "editing" section farther down, but if you're not, let's talk about the different editing softwares (softwares isn't a word. -_-) you can use. A free editing software is Windows Movie Maker. If you have Windows 7, you are only allowed to get Windows Live Movie Maker. Windows XP or Vista, one of you are still allowed to get Windows Movie Maker, but the other has to get Windows Live. Do a Google search of "windows movie maker download" and go to the official website to learn more. These editing softwares, like I said, ARE free, but very basic and doesn't make the video in high quality. There are many different options they don't have. It's good to have Windows Movie Maker if you're not using it for the whole video, but to put videos in, edit, save to your computer, then upload to YouTube. But right now, we're talking about making a whole video IN a editing software. If you have a Mac, I think the best option would be iMovie, but since I don't have a Mac I don't know. And I don't know if it's free or not. Sony Vegas is really good, but that can cost $500. There are ways to get it for free, but I'm not going to be responsible if you illegally download it. There are simpler versions of Sony Vegas, that cost around $50. (sorry to all the non- Americans or Canadians, I'm not converting it to all the currencies. Just look up a currency converter.) It's your decision what to do, and find an editing software that works best for you. If you would like to get to know all the features and options on the editing software you choose, do some YouTube and Google searches.

RECORDING SOFTWARES

If you're a gamer (I'm guessing you all are. Why are you on PlanetMINECRAFT if you're not?) and want to upload a video to YouTube, recording softwares are what you need to use. These record your computer screen or your TV screen. They are also good for recording shows or showing people how to do specific things on the computer. As far as I know, there is no way to record your TV screen for free, and you need to buy a device from a store, but there are many free options for your computer screen. Most have options to become premium (allows you to record longer than 10 minutes, or however long it says) but you, of course, have to buy that. If the video is going to be longer than 10 minutes, editing carefully will make almost no one realize you had to stop the game and start recording again. (we'll go into this more in editing) Examples of some recording software (for computers) are Fraps, Bandicam, and Microsoft Expression. Again, I cannot tell you which one is the best for you. It all depends on the lag your computer gets. Bandicam works the best for me. It and Fraps are almost exactly the same on some computers (such as mine) but Fraps only allows you to record for 30 seconds without premium. Bandicam and Microsoft Expression allow 10 minutes. You really have to experiment which one works best, and there are more options than I said here. One thing you need to know gamers, use headphones with a mic. This makes your voice clearer, quality better, and you won't hear annoying mouse clicks all the time as long as the mic is close enough to your face. Or most background noises. You will need an editing software if you don't have premium for recording softwares. But it can be a free one. Trimming each of the video clips carefully to remove you unpausing the game makes it almost unnoticeable you stopped the game. And you need to put all the clips together.

CAMERAS

Webcams too. Again, you most likely won't need an expensive editing software. As long as it's just for vlogs, cover videos, lip syncing a song, or just filming some random stuff that goes on (example of person who does this: computernerd01) You WILL need an expensive one if you want to do things with cool effects, such as green screen. Sony Vegas automatically has a Chroma Key option, but Windows Movie Maker requires you to download something that only lasts for 14 days. If you download it again, it might work, but that would get kind of annoying. So, AGAIN, it all depends on what you want to do. (if you want to make a rant video, there's some people who just use a camera and record from there, but others use voice editing software, such as Audacity, then get a bunch of pictures about the topic and have the sound overlay them. Whatever you want to do.)

EDITING

Here comes some advanced stuff. If no editing needs to be done to the video (unlikely) than, GREAT! Put it on your computer and upload it to YouTube. But if editing does need to be done, there are many ways to go with this. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Parodies I'll talk about first. Now, I doubt you sang while you or, if it's a gaming parody, your character acted. You recorded it with Audacity or some other voice editing software. Now you need to make sure your lip syncing (if it's you, not a gaming character) matches up with the music, the actual acting matches up with the music, and play it through. Sometimes, fixing clips causes other clips to get messed up. I know this happened to me A LOT in my days of Windows Movie Maker. Replay it over and over again until it's exactly the way you want it. Gamers, like I said before, trim your clips, put them together, take out anything because someone walked into your recording place and interrupted you... if you would like to know how to do any of this do some YouTube and Google searches about your editing software. If you made a lyric video, make sure the words match up to the song, make sure they are the RIGHT lyrics, add in some transitions, and make it look pretty/nice. Not just a black background with the default font. Notice how the most popular lyric videos for newer songs have cool backgrounds and fonts. AND FOR MOST VIDEOS, you're going to want some title slide and cool effects in somewhere. Not all the time, but most. If you have a question about some type of videos and whether you should add... whatever or not add... whatever, please leave it in the comments.

UPLOADING

YAY! You've got your video done, it looks good, and you want to upload it to YouTube. If you made it on Sony Vegas, you can't just save it to your computer and upload to YouTube from YouTube. Sony Vegas files are considered "project files" and YouTube can't upload those. What you can do is click "file" on Sony Vegas. Under there should be an option saying "Upload To YouTube." THIS will work. It just requires you to give your username and password, then fill out the tile, description, tags, and category. Click "upload" or "submit" I can't remember what it says. The video will render, than upload. You will see a green bar, the approximate time left, and the elapsed time. The longer the video, the longer it takes to upload. A 15 minute video might take an hour to upload, but you can do other things in the mean time. With Windows Movie Maker you can just "publish", which will not take as long as Sony Vegas, go to YouTube, and upload from there. If you have the video on a camera or phone, save it to your computer and then upload it from YouTube. Webcams should automatically save it to your computer, and there's an option on YouTube to record a video ON YouTube using a webcam, and then it will upload it. You should also be familiar with "thumbnails." This is what the YouTuber will see if he/she sees the video. This can decide whether or not they will click on the video. YouTube will automatically give you three frames from the video you can choose as your thumbnail once the video is uploaded. You can choose the best one out of those, or you can create your own. There should be an option under the thumbnails from the video you can choose where it says "custom thumbnail" You can browse your computer for a picture to use to represent the video. You can make one on Photoshop, Paint.net, GIMP, your choice. Or just find a picture or something on Google images. (Most people actually MAKE one themselves or get one of their fans to do it, so...)

So there you have it. The basics on making your videos GOOD. Oh yeah, DON'T USE MOST OF THE EDITING SOFTWARE CHOICES YOUTUBE GIVES YOU. There are some ones that are OK, like... I can't see them since I don't want to use them, but the ones you don't want to use or Go! Animate or that other 3D creating one. Unless you have a premium account, THEY SUCK. I'm not even sure if you can use them anymore... oh, well. If you can, don't use them. Thanks for reading this! If you have any suggestions/questions/feedback leave them in the comments.
