How to run a Successful Minecraft Server that can make profit
Hello, my name is AfroChikken, owner of Dread Legion, one of the worlds TOP cracked servers, and since I see so many bad servers out there, i'm going to give a quick tutorial on how to run one without it sucking.
There are several rules when you want to run your own server, for example less is more. When you have like 50+ plugins, it doesn't make your server interesting, just makes it lag. All servers think that, the more plugins they have, the more people that will want to come onto it. Well due to compatibility reasons, thats not a really good idea. So far, there are about 25 plugins that a good server should use
There are more plugins, but just remember, only use what will make the player stay, they are not going to see EVERY single plugin in your server.
Part 2: Good Adminship
Without good admins, your server is pretty much nothing. No one wants an abusive admin, while also no one wants an admin that does nothing whatsoever and just goofs off. You want admins that are mature enough to understand what they have to do incase a player needs help, but also know how to have fun. REMEMBER: NEVER HIRE FRIENDS. The reason that you do not want to hire friends is because they think that since they know you, the owner, they can abuse the power, and they have more power, then the other admins.
Part 3: Economy
Almost every server needs an economy. Without a place for players to go so they can sell and trade their items, they don't feel like they are part of a community, and more like stranded in the wilderness
Part 4: Building
When a player logs onto a server, the first thing you want them to see is the following
Without these key elements, you won't get as many players, and you won't be able to make any profit. Some tips is, never to say o Anyone here good at buildingo on the server, because chances are, they are really horrible builders looking for power. If you really want good players, go around looking at players houses and seeing if they are worthy to build something for you. Tip: Don't let them use WorldEdit, it'll look better if they don't.
Part 5: Advertising
In my opinion, this is one of the most IMPORTANT steps in running a server. The reason for this is because of you need to give the player a reason to log into the server in the first place. Some tips are, don't talk about what the server has, talk about what the server can do for the player. All players want to feel like the server revolves around them, and you have to give them the illusion that it does, and you will have loving, devoted people on your server at almost all times. Remember to make a flashy banner for the server, something that'll catch the players eye, and draw them in. Then catch them with the things that the server will do for the player.
Part 6: Being in the right place, at the right time, with the right people
Advertising where people are is always the key. Do a quick Google search for o Minecraft server listso and just post yourself EVERYWHERE possible.
Part 7: Voting
Voting is a major part of running a server, because it inspires the player to make other people think about the server, and get a reward for doing so. Think of it like this; the more voters you get, the more players you get, the more players you get, the more chance of donators you're going to get. If you need help setting up Votifier, again, remember, that google is your friend.
Part 8: Setting up Donations
When you set up donations, you're going to want a quick and easy way for players to find a way how. Using BuyCraft is the most common way to do this. For more info, go to www.buycraft.net. Basically, if you offer a reward for donating, like being able to have the player feel more important then the other members, will EASILY inspire players to donate to your server. And since Minecraft is made up of mostly people with money, then it will be easy to do so.
Part 9: Server Hosting
Hosting a server in a lag-free enviroment is the most important part of running a server. Even if you computer has enough memory to hold a decent amount of people, your bandwidth will be eaten up after three people. Initially, you could possibly try to exploit the internet as much as possible, by using low-bandwidth plugin and things that won't take too many packets to send back to the client, but, I digress. You're going to want to save up about $66 and go to Exodus Hosting. They have been Dread Legion's server host for the longest time, and they will happily support you too. (http://exodushosting.net/billing/aff.php?aff=137 o That link will help pay for server bills). But remember, never use a home-run server as a long term solution, and always end up with a dedicated server if you plan to be long term.
There will be more to come

WorldEdit: Mainly like a dependency, but don't use it for building, may make it easier, but makes the building itself will look bad
WorldGuard: NEVER use Factions for safezones, too many ways to break them, and makes your server look nooby.
Factions: Give the players a community. Everyone wants to be party of something, whether that be Towny or Factions, just don't run both
Vault: Again more dependencies for other plugins.
PermissionsEx/GroupManager/bPermissions/etc: These are made to make sure that players do what they are supposed to, and only have access to the commands that you want them to.
A portal plugin (iGates, CreativeGates, etc): This gives players fast means of transportation without having them right click anything. Essentials warp signs look nooby, and portals can also look REALLY cool in a server spawn if done right.
Essentials: This will give you almost every command that you'll need to have.
Votifier: This will make people want to vote for your server for the top one, and often having a reward for voting is going to get players to vote for your server.
There are more plugins, but just remember, only use what will make the player stay, they are not going to see EVERY single plugin in your server.

They can support me in my travels throughout the server
They are professional and they take the server seriously.
