Allow me to begin by saying that if you are going to be making a server to become popular or are trying to make a living off of this server it WILL NOT be worth it! That being said, if you want a small, 10-20 person server, this is for you. Things you'll need:- A computer with at least two gigabytes of RAM
- An operating system of windows XP or greater (You could also go with Windows Server but thats only for advanced server owners)
- Now this last one is optional but is recommended for unattended access: The application Adminium for IOS
This is not how to make a server, I may make a blog on how to do that but that will come later. You'll probably want to use a Bukkit server so thats what this will be for. You need to use as few plugins as possible , you can add more if you have a lot of RAM. The more RAM that you use the better but if you only want a few friends on, one gig should be fine. You may want to access your server from your phone, you can do this by using JSONAPI and Adminium. You can mess around with the config files in there as you wish. Make sure you can give your computer some time off at least once a week (I do it twice a week). If you're gonna have strangers online then you should make backups on a regular basis.
