So, you want your server to be successful, but you can never find they key to success? Well in this blog you'll learn about the successes to a server! I will not be spoon feeding you every inch of detail, but will give you a decent picture of how it all works.

The first thing you need on a server, is a theme.
When choosing your theme, you want it to be unique, but also liked. If you make a yet another survival factions server, you will probably not get very far. If you get a survival factions minigames server, with mini games and of course survival factions, you will get a lot more views. Some examples of themes are Tekkit, Feed the Beast, Minigames, RPG, Gang-Wars, Skyblock. You probably get the message.

The second thing you need is a server itself.
After deciding what theme you want, it's time to get a server! If you home host a server, nine times out of ten it will fail. You will want to rent a server from a professional host. I personally recommend nitrous networks, as their interface is fantastic to use, support is great, and it is nice for beginners! If you do host a server, you will want to have at least 25 mbps download, and 10 mbps upload. That should support around 20 players.

The third thing you need is plugins,
Getting plugins for a server is probably the most important part. You will want to get a land protect plugin. I would recommend worldedit with worldguard, as it is very easy to use. You will want some plugins to match the theme for your server. Under most circumstances, you will want a block logger. I would recommend coreprotect as it's easy to use, and very reliable. Last but not least is permissions. I recommend permissonsex, as it is easy to use, and is compatible with most plugins.
For some plugins you may want to search youtube for a guide of how to use them, and set them up. In this blog as i stated before, I'm not spoon feeding you information, just giving you tips.

The fourth thing you need is staff.
Getting reliable staff is a crucial part in the success of your server. for an average 24 slot server, you can have about two admins, three mods, a co owner, and yourself. To get reliable staff you will want to start up a recruitment thread on the forum section of planet minecraft. Look on mcbans and mcbouncer, see if they have a serious ban history, if so, don't hire them! I also recommend that you set and state a minimum age for your staff. You will want your minimum age to be around 13 or 14, as that is the age minecraft players tend to mature up. Yes, your staff should have some perks to make them happy. For some cases, '/give' and '/heal', just those types of things. Even though staff should have some perks, they should never take them for granted. If you plan to OP your staff, be sure to expect a whole lot more false applicants (griefers.). If you OP your staff they will have access to commands such as '//set lava' - you don't want that!

Spawn buildings!
You will need to set up a wowser spawn on your server! If I log onto a server, to find a 9x9 spawn with signs in my face, I will log straight off. You want to give your players space, but make sure to make it impossible to get lost. I recommend hiring a few builders on your server, if you're not good at building yourself.

Now to get to making a banner.
Setting up a banner is an important part in advertising your server. If you have photoshop or gimp you can make your own banner. If you don't have a banner, look around on PMC, maybe ask staff on your server to see if they can make you one! If you cannot get anyone, or cannot make your own banner, google a banner maker.

Now to the advertising.
To get a large audience on your server, you will need to advertise well. You can either hire advertisers, or do this job yourself. You will want decent pictures of your server to upload as you are uploading your server to PMC. You of course want to add your banner as well! Remember, PMC is not the only site to advertise your server on. There are 100s of them. Google 'minecraft server list', and add your server to popular ones on some of those.

Maintaining your server.
You will want to keep your players on your server. Make sure to be on at least an hour a day. Set up a modreq mechanism for your players to report problems and rule breakers. Listen to player's suggestions! On some servers I play on, you get very arrogant owners. Make sure to be a nice owner.
Make sure all your staff are performing as expected, don't be afraid to demote them!

Getting a website.
You will usually want a website for your server. With my host, I get free web hosting. On my website I use the PHPBB (planetminecraft uses this too!) forums tool. You can look on my profile if you are interested in what it will look like. If you don't have free webhosting, and/or are not able to use a tool like this, there are tonnes of free ones. I would recommend webs.com, but if you don't like this you can use enjin. A website can be used for staff applications, ban appeals, donations, etc.

Well that about wraps up this tutorial blog. If you have any questions regarding this topic, or have suggestions, please leave them down below!

You seem a lot more mature than most 11 year olds, unfortunately my experience with people under the age of 13-14 (apart from my brother who is 11 and co owner on my server :D) has not been too good.

Dont worry At times I've failed to be at my best in running a server because I was new to it (having a Minecraft friend who runs a server and Im a mod gives me a taste of how to work it), I have had to have many staff changes (We are due to a new one due to my cousins Persuded me to op them, wasnt a great idea) and we have set up basic rules (normal server rules and our special rule), Just remember I'm not exactly your average 11 year old, and due to recent experiences(yeah, on the server i moderate I had to deal with one of the players who was agaisnt me) I've been able to figure more things out on how to organize, Well I think I still chould pay attention to some things! Well Keep up to good work on PMC (and a your server if you have one)

Thanks! Renting a server to support 24 players will cost around £7-£10, I would recommend nitrous networks or creeper host, if you need a host.

Thanks for the great tutorial. Though I won't be needing it, im sure it will help others.
If you need a free spawn building you can try checking a few of my builds out. Though you will need to PM if its for use on a public server. You can see my latest one out here.

Even though I'm not nearly experienced enough to maintain a server, I still enjoyed reading this to see what making a server is like! :)
