An Introduction to Servers...

A Minecraft server is a place where Minecrafters from all over the world can come and play together with friends or even enemies!

1st Step : Hosting

When creating a server you need to make sure that you choose the best hosting company as it's hard to migrate all your info from one company to another later on, plus, at the end of the day it's all about getting the best for your money!

Depending on how many players you have, the ammount of money you spend will vary, if you get loads of players you will need to upgrade your memory and slots! Whereas if you plan on having a small, down to earth community then you shouldn't have to pay too much.

Personally, I'd recommend ServerMiner as they have quality hosting for a cheap price!

2nd Step : Plugins

Ok so a lot of people make the wrong desicions here, there is no point in having "oooo fanceh custooom ploogins" as players actually don't care! Unless you're a big server network then you should just start off with the basic plugins like CommandBook or Essentials (I use Essentials).

You need spawn protection so that players don't grief? Use WorldGuard! Note: it needs WorldEdit to run.

Permissions are probably some of the most important things for a server as it controls what people can and cannot do, I use PermissionsEx for this.

Now depending on what server you plan on making you will need other plugins and I cannot really help you with that right now as it would take ages, so let's just go onto the next step.

3rd Step : Buildings

Ok, so when making a server you want to have a good design for your spawn so that players don't leave as soon as they log in!

If you're not such a good builder then maybe get a friend or a dedicated player to build for you.

I don't have a dedicated player! Well then go onto Planet Minecraft and look for builders in the server section! Make sure you keep an eye on them so that they don't grief though!

4th Step : Getting Players

I'd suggest that you first put your server on Planet Minecraft as that's where most of my players came from! Make sure you have a good server banner so that people are more likely to click on your server.

Also have a detailed description and a YouTube video of your server!

If you don't have a good recording software then get a dedicated player to record and once again, if you don't any then look for people on Planet Minecraft.

5th Step : Netiquette

One of the most important thing to remember is that you're not a huge important person like the owner of Hive or Shotbow, you must be nice, help your players and most importantly, don't pretend that they are "not worthy" and that you are "a god" remember, you want them to stay!

I'd recommend that you enforce some rules on your server via Essentials or just through signs at your spawn!

Tips

1. Specify your age group! This is important as you don't want 5 year olds coming onto a server where everybody is swearing and being annoying. No wonder today's generation is full of angry 12 year olds!

2. Get your players to tell their friends about your server, a good playerbase is a playerbase you can trust.

3. Recognise a griefer! Never give staff to a random person, for example : I only make staff apps available to people who have a playtime of 4 days and even then they don't have a garaunteed place as staff!

4. Once you have a small playerbase then I recommend that when you upvote (Bump) your post on PMC that you don't go on to your server as long as there are other players on. I'm not sure why this seems to work but it can : make your server seem less desperate, it can take away pressure for new players and tell new players that your community is nice and easy to depend on.
