Hello everyone!
I'm here to teach you how to survive in a Minecraft desert.
It's best you do the steps in days and when you have completed the step for that day, move on to mining and upgrading.

Getting Wood
Probably the most important thing in the game, as wood is the base for some items and needed for collecting the rest.
A good desert spawn usually consists of you spawning by a forest biome and a lake in the desert.
Once you have enough wood to make a crafting table and basic wooden tools, find and kill 3 sheep.
Head to your home base and dig 2 holes 10x10 blocks wide.  Make them only 1 block deep for now, we'll come back to it later, but make sure they are a good distance apart.
Make a temporrary shelter out of wood 2x2x3 and put a door on one of the short ends.  Place a bed dircectly across from it and stack your furnace and crafting table beside it.  There is no space for a chest because this home is only temporary, and will not stay up forever.  Make a double chest and put it on the opposite side of the house across from the door to hold all of your building materials and just stuff in general.

But I don't WANNA go into the scary dark cave
This is an easily solved problem.  Dig deep in one of the holes and make stairs using the wall to the bottom of the hole.  Go directly down until you reach ores.  When you reach bedrock (Which shouldn't be for awhile) make floors and strip mine until you hit ores or a cave system.  Just keep mining, just keep mining... ooooh a creeper!  (imitates Creeper noises) *Creeper gets annoyed and blows up*  <Chat:  LandDori was blown up by a creeper>

I shall build because I can!
"Ok Kitten" you ask.  "What about that other hole?"
That's what I'm getting to.  Mine it out until it is four blocks in height.  Get out of the hole and, 3 blocks away from the edge, lay down a square of wood surrounding the hole.  DO NOT fill it all in with wood.  Now, pick a side and dig down four blocks, making it as long as the wooden border.  Make it 5 blocks wide and then make a way to get out.  On one side of the hole, covering all 5 blocks, make a farm.  This will be your main source of food.  Whether animal or plant, though, it really doesn't matter.  Surround with fences. 
Go inside again and expand to the wooden blocks.  Make all the walls cobble or really anything you like.  Make the floor wood and the celing sandstone.  You can keep the wooden blocks, if you like, for decoration.  Move all of your essentials inside, add some glass, place a door, put down paintings, do whatever you like!

Yard Work
Take some dirt and make it the floor of the area outside.  Grass should grow in time. While you have it on you, take more dirt and space it out 2 blocks on your wooden border above your house.  Plant saplings and put a torch on the side of each block to give it light, then you have unlimited wood.  Make a fence around the entire area that you live in (yard, tree farm, house) and add a fence gate where you get into the yard.  Go into the yard, grow a couple saplings, make a fake boulder, dig a place for a river, bonemeal some grass, make it have awesome fung sheui and just have it the way YOU want it to be.
