So you want to survive your first night?

Here's how I like to do things:

1. Go to Single Player mode and start a new Survival map.

2. As soon as you spawn, start looking for trees. Once you find some, start collecting wood (aiming at a tree block and holding down the left click until the block breaks into a smaller wood block. Walk over it to pick it up). Get about 10 blocks worth (I like to get more to make charcoal).

3. Once you have collected wood, start looking for a good open area near a hill that will be easy to find when you go out exploring. This will be the site of your temporary home.

4. There are two ways you can go from here:
1. If you do happen to find a good hill, dig into it and make a 'Hobbit Hole'. You should dig it one block below ground level at the opening, two blocks high, and one block wide (for a doorway). From there, hollow out a room in the hobbit hole.

2. If there is no hill, just dig two blocks down, "Fallout shelter" style, and start hollowing out an area.

5. Block of the entry with a dirt block so that it only has one block space not filled and allows you to see the sky. Nothing should be able to jump, or walk, into your house. This also gives you a window/ 'clock'

6. Next comes crafting. First, open your inventory (usually the default button for this is 'I', but I prefer 'E').

7. Drag the wood into one of the four crafting squares at the top right corner of the inventory.

8. You should see a square to the right with a wood plank block that says "wooden plank" and has 4 on the bottom corner. Click on it until you have the number of planks you feel you need. (remember to leave some raw wood to turn into charcoal).

9. Next craft a crafting table. Do this by following the same procedure (except use four wooden planks, one in each square). You should see a block that says "Crafting bench" in the right square this time.

10. Place the crafting bench somewhere in the 'Hobbit hole'. (left click a spot on the floor).

11. Left click the crafting bench. Take two wooden planks and put them in separate squares of the crafting square One above the other vertically. This should make some sticks.

12. Now make a pick ax. (Take three sticks and line them up vertically the put three wooden planks in a line horizontally over that [should look like a pick ax])

13. Use the pick ax to mine some stone [which will turn into cobble stone] (same as punching wood). Collect at least 9 cobble stone.

14.Use cobble stone to make a furnace [basically draw a perimeter around the square of the crafting menu].

15. Place the furnace somewhere in your Hobbit hole. Right click it and prepare for use.

16. Put your special stash of raw wood in the top square. Put regular wooden planks in the lower square. The end result should be charcoal (even though I usually do that on the second day.)

17. Use the charcoal to make a torch (one charcoal vertically placed above one stick equals four torches)

18. Place torches where needed.

That's really all there is to the first night. Or you could follow 1-13 and just mine until the next day.
It's really all up to you!

By the way, the video and blog took approximately three hours to make (I managed to watch three episodes of Bones on Netflix while working on the video alone XD)
