Here are some tips for starting off a building and when you're done!

1.Have a Plan:
Most people start out with great enthusiasm building but as it goes on they start to lose confidance in themselves and they lose track of what they should be building. The main solution for this is a plan. There are easy ways to make a plan, like getting out paint.net and drawing out a rough map of the area you're going to build then adding in buildings. Another way to do it is by getting a dynmap or overhead view of the map and then drawing in the foundations for buildings with the amount of blocks they will be on it. I'd say the second method works much better for building towns and forts.

You can also make a word document with lists of stuff you wish to include and helpful images. These can really help you get a greater idea of what you are trying to recreate. You could also make small parts of a build, like a wall of a house or a tower just so you know what you're going to do.

Having a plan means that you will not go off track while building and the building will come out how you want it instead of constantly being added onto while you build for stuff that you have forgotten.

2.Prepare your building site:

I don't mean going out and build scaffolding, I just mean clearing the land or setting up a boundary, even making a small road going through an area can throughly improve your building. This helps because if you correspond this with your plan you won't overbuild, or under build and your building should looks resonably well! But you don't always have to follow the boundaries as sometimes you just need to extend it a few blocks. Clearing a site first can improve the building speed three times, it helps you invision your building on that spot and lets you see how the scenery will be effected by it.

Clearing trees for a settlement and flattening terrain lets you get a good guideline of what you are going to be building. I find many times that I will clear an area and realise that I am working with too small of a space.

3.Lay it out:
Laying out your build can help immesely. Some people find that they get tired after a short while and when they see the amount of work ahead of them just give up, so this is only for the people who know that they'll keep on working, even when they know how much work there is left.

The basics of laying out a building is building the foundations or an outline of the building first. This helps you understand where everything is meant to be and it helps you stay on track while building. It can also stop you finding that you have a bit of land too small to build something on but too big to leave open.

Remember that you don't always need to stick to your layout, when you're building you will find that things will change.

A lot of the time you might find that when building a building like a castle that you may think you are building it too big but you have to take everything into account, the walls, courtyard and keep. When building it is better to build bigger and have a massive building than to build small and realise that you built it too small.

4.Build it: With all your plan layed out before you all you need to do now is build it! This should be the longest part of all depending on the build. This bit should be the part where your vision comes to life. After all the planning, laying out and outlining this should be the most rewarding stage. Remember to build it to your plan!

5.Go back over it: Do you think that the kitchen could use a table? Do it! The more details the better! When you are finished just walk through your build and fix any errors you find. Normally people fly over a build but that doesn't really give you the feel of being a player! You should walk around the build and try and fill in any corners that just feel empty.

Mainly when I am planning I set an amount of rooms and what is going to be the theme of those rooms etc. But I suppose it doesn't work for all. :)
