I was planning to do something for 30 subs but I forgot, so this is how I shade hair. Feedback is always appreciated. I use MCSkin3d because of the colour wheel and HSV sliders, but this would probably work on other skinning tools.
Step 1: Make a palette.
This tutorial by the_soup and this tutorial by KnobleKnives explain colour theory much better than I ever could. Go check them out if you're interested. I make a palette with 5 shades just in case, but 4 will work fine for this method.
Step 2: Add your darkest shade.
I usually cover the area where the hair will be with the 3rd shade on the palette. Make sure to do the different pattern on the top of the head, this will be important later.
Step 3: Add your next darkest shade.
Step 4: Add the highlights.
You can use the optional 5th shade to add more highlights if you want to.
Make sure to always shade the top of the head differently than the rest. The darker line down the middle is the part. You can change the shape if you want to, but it will look unrealistic if you shade it all the same.
Step 5: Shade the bottom of the head.
It's best to wait until you are done with the rest of the shading and have already decided how long you want the rest of the hair that continues onto the body to shade this part. I chose to do short hair on this skin. Toget a round look, make this part darker.
You are welcome to use this method for your own skins. I didn't really create it anyway, I had a lot of inspiration from Maddie, Leia_, PotatoLogic, JennaAmber, and Agreeable.
Thank you for reading my blog! If you have any feedback, please leave a comment. Any constructive criticism is appreciated.
EDIT: first popreel, yay! :D that brownie ad looks really good
EDIT 2: Still on popreel o_o Also, I uploaded the finished skin used in this tutorial here.
