Locks of Love

Today I cut my hair. For 7 years I had long hair, during that time I cut it three times but never super short. I kept it long and I kept donating the hair. This might be the last time I can do such a thing for a very long time. The reason being is for what I am trying to do in my life I need to have a somewhat professional appearance. Though I will not be able to donate I can still help to spread the world and maybe get someone to donate even if it is just once.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to children and young adults under the age of 21 that are financially disadvantaged and suffering from any long term medical condition that causes hair loss. Often when people think of children that have lost their hair they think of cancer and its treatments being the cause. But according to their site most of the children suffer from something called alopecia areata. This condition as of yet has no known cause or cure.

From their site this is their Mission Statement


Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.


There are some guidelines for the hair they accept. I will just give a few of them here.

  • The hair must measure 10 inches (25.5 centimeters) from tip to tip.
  • The hair must be in a ponytail or braided so as to keep it in a bundle.
  • Hair off the floor can not be used.
  • Hair that has been bleached can not be used. Colored hair is useable though so long as it wasno t bleached before hand.
  • Gray hair is accepted but it will be sold to help offset the cost of manufacturing.


Conclusion


So ladies, if you have ever wanted to try having short hair go for it and donate to Locks of Love, you would be helping a child recover some self esteem.

And guys give long hair a shot, you dono t know you may like it and who hasno t wanted to head bang with long hair at least once in their life just for the hell of it.
