Take note that this is from my personal experience and could negatively affect the repercussions that happen.
Today I'll be talking about things not to do and things to do when first starting a minecraft server.
First of all, it's best to get everything finished. Don't open the server and only 1 thing is done. This can leave a bad reputation to people who join early and could negatively affect your server in the future. It is important to get a mind set before actually doing anything with the server, if one day you're randomly inspired. Make an idea first, don't just go for it. Though it may sound perfect, it requires lots of dedication and focus.
When looking for staff, evaluate them first. Make wise choices, when choosing staff look for important things, such as what they want to do, what they want to help with, why they want to help and past experience. If you're looking for staff and you just invite random people to your server and then op them all. I guarantee you're not going to get what you want, especially with how the minecraft community is these days. It's better to find older and mature staff members, who are trustworthy. This may sound like a daunting task but it is worth it.
When you make your minecraft server it is important that you make some way that members can contact you, Without contact your server could very fall apart. Your members will soon notice that there is no point in playing if there is an on going problem that won't be fixed until you come on. Obviously there is patience involved, but still. Your members will get very restless if the server keeps crashing or some other frustrating problem.
Choose the plugins you actually need. Don't install a plugin just because it does something cool. Take something that you absolutely need and make sure that your server benefits from it. It's okay to install 1 or 2 fun plugins, but to have most of your plugin base revolve around fun mess around plugins will not get your server anywhere. Also if you install too many plugins your server will no longer be able to reload and when you try it will crash. This happens when you exceed around 10 plugins.
User Interaction. Make sure to have your players always active with server events and such. Voting is great, it keeps players wanting to gain rewards and such. Special Ranks, that are acquirable without donating. Make ranks such as youtuber and advertiser. Players want higher ranks than other players, it makes them feel superior. It's good to involve your players in things like advertisement and such.
Advertisement. Advertising is good, but it becomes bad when you advertise on another server and you are absolutely desperate for players. This will get you no where fast. It may get you a few members at first, but you will soon start to realize that a majority of players who join will just ask for op, ask for items or gamemode changes. Or even say they are from planetminecraft. Doing this also lowers your reputation, it shows that you cannot successfully run a minecraft server on your own and that you are desperate for players that you most likely aren't going to get if you stay on the same path. Rather advertise on websites, target minecraft server listing sites and such, overtime you will get good players. Make a website, make videos. Even paying for your minecraft server to be advertised on a website is an okay idea. But is highly unrecommended considering that you may not get any players what so ever. Anyway, like I said server listing sites really do help. Get some of your friends to tell their friends and their friends to tell more friends. You can then on start a community of people that you actually can get to know, and from then on people start to look at your server and want to join. You will then start to attract more mature players. Having a stable and nice community is great because the way the minecraft community is now definitely helps with creating a community. More mature players want to find servers that have a good community base and is strong.
