The first one is not really supposed to be funny, but for the second one you must have seen the scene with the Knights of Ni in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
The knights say Arthur must fetch them a shrubbery and cut a tree down with a herring before he is allowed to continue his journey. His reply to that you can read in the first panel of the second comic.
