Intro:
I see a lot of people have started to create new severs these days. As a server owner, I thought I should let people know information and facts about creating a server. The Good, The Bad, and Tips. So if your thinking about creating a server read this and think again.
Before we begin I want to give you a quick tip that will make your life a lot easier. Don't create a server, there's a 90% chance your gonna fail. Stop reading this and go enjoy your favorite server. Now that we've gotten that out of the way.
The Bad:
* More Than 70% of servers never last more than a few months.
Most Servers never get established and the owners quickly learn it's just not worth it and move on. Let this be a lesson to you. Don't make a server.
* Your gonna have to buy hosting.
Self-hosting a public server is NOT an option, sorry. It's gonna lag, it won't be 24/7 (not even if you leave your computer on), and you'll get ddosed. Free hosting isn't an option either, your goning to get shut down and lose your files.
* Your not going to make a cent.
In fact your going to lost money. Make sure you have a steady income and don't rely at ALL on donations. If you can't afford that, don't make a server.
* Your never going to get any players.
After of being the owner of a server for 6 months I still only have 5 players on at the most. No matter what you do, it wouldn't get you any players.
* Your going to have to be on constantly.
Don't rely on your staff to be any help, your the only one that's going to know how to do things. People are going to always want more. You always have to be improving.
* It gets worse.
People get angre, hackers and griefers come in, your server goes down and the world turns upside down. Those are just a few of the problems I face every day.
The Good:
* It feels good.
Even though running a server is a living heck, it still feels good to see those few regulars on the server.
* You have power no one else has.
As the owner of the server you can do what you want (with in reason), you have players looking up to you and wishing the could be you. You never have to worry about buying vip or getting demoted. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Tips:
* Advertise, Advertise, Advertise.
Advertise anywhere you can but be warned, advertising where it is not allowed ticks people off and damages your servers reputation. I would never step foot on a server that advertised via YouTube comments.
* Be on amap (as much as possible)
Be on whenever you can, so you can great new players on your server.
* Don't be afk.
Don't be afk more than 5 minutes, if someone comes on and needs help, and you don't respond, your bound to lose a player.
* Have good staff.
Don't go on to the pmc chat and say "I need staff!", set a limit (like you have to play on the server for two weeks and then apply). Demote the not so good ones, crack down on people who rarly come on.
* Have a permissions plugin.
This is what ticks me off the most. If you don't have a permissions plugin your not going to get anywhere. Period.
Conclusion:
So now you see what it takes to run a server. 20% of you are going to ignore me and built one anyway not following what I told you. In a month or two their gonna realize I was right and quit minecraft forever. Hopefully, 10% of you are going to learn and not make a server. They'll be happy on your favorite server, instead. Another 40% of you are going to make a server, follow my tips and information and still end up like the first 20%. The last 10% of you will make a server, follow my tips, and end up in the same spot as me.
So you ask me, "What should I do?". Well, here is my answer, be that happy 10%, spend your money on irl things or vip on servers and be happier. If you really want to make a server, I can't stop you, but you have been warned.
