There is something I noticed while I'm here at PMC. Some people seem to want to "exchange" diamonds, favorites and such. As in "I diamond this submission, if you diamond mine" (usually with much less orthography and grammar, though). Well, there are many here who do things of rather questionable value all the time, so I usually just ignore it.

However, what really grinds my gears is that this also extends to contest. I only recently looked at them and saw that diamonds, favorites, subscriptions and, to a lesser extent, also advertising on YouTube are not uncommon prizes. Not just the thing, with which the participants took part in the contest in question, but other things. Like the latest submission or even the entirety of the winners work. No matter whether the judges even like the other stuff they made or whether they are even interested in what they do in the future.

I'm not the most active person here and there are surely things about PMC that I didn't fully get. But one thing is completely clear to me:

Diamonds, favorites, downloads and subscriptions are a sign of approval of the work(s) in question. And nothing else!

Do you like a submission? Diamond it! Favorite it, if you think that it's that good!
Do you dislike a submission? Stay away from the diamond and favorite buttons!

That, and only that, is the way to judge whether to give any of these things. Using them as prizes in a contest, maybe even as bait for them, is pretty much abuse of the diamond and favorite functions. If you have nothing else to offer as a prize, then make a contest with no prizes. At least, I don't think that prizes are mandatory and above all stands the fun. Sure, there may be less participants then, but it's still better than offering diamonds.

Of course, the same thing extends to people, who like to "trade" diamonds and pretty every usage of diamonds, favorites and subs, that are made without any regard on their actual opinion of the submission.

I hope I made my point clear. Of course, I don't expect people to stop using diamonds, and other such things, as contest prizes, but at least I have this off my chest. I don't even like rants normally, but felt that I needed to do this.

Good post! I have to agree, giving diamonds as prizes is not very good.

One thing that anoys me is when a submission has more downloads then diamonds. Why do people think that it is good enough to download(which uses some of your Internet and can take awhile) , but not good enough to click the diamond button ( which takes a tiny bit of your Internet, and only a second of your time.)

If its good enough to download, it's good enough to diamond.

Diamond for diamond, sub for sub, etc. aren't even allowed on the site. I don't agree with it, either, but diamond, subscriptions and favorites are commonly given as contest rewards for those who cannot provide anything better.
