Well a lot of servers I have seen, barely have any players on them and I wonder why? Then I meet their staff...
The #1 reason why servers that seem like they should have more players, is because of the staff on the server. The staff I see on most servers, are disrespectful, power-abusers, swearers (I see this a lot, like they can't even follow their own rules...) and the worst, griefers! Yeah I have been griefed by an admin on a server before. Now these servers are also the a lot less popular then a ton of other servers. Honestly you can spam your server ip and become the most popular server for like 5 minutes, but you won't be able to keep your players, so that is why I am gonna post some tips on how to become a good server staff member.
1. Don't treat the players disrespectfully! Remember, you are there to make Minecraft fun for the player! You don't do it for yourself!
2. Don't break your own rules! If you break your own rules, then the players on your servers will think it isn't a rule, and they will start breaking that rule! It's a snowball effect. When they get in trouble for breaking that rule, then they will throw the "But you did it!" in your face, and unlike all the other times, people will agree with them!
3. Don't swear! It is just plain annoying to join a server and people are cussing like they work on a the ranch from Of Mice and Men. If you do allow cussing on your server, then please put something along the lines of: We recommend you are 16-18 years or older to play! Now this might sound crazy, but I have seen kids parents sue the game makers or the server host for stupid stuff like that!
4. Don't abuse your power! Now this one is obvious, but not as commonly followed. I have made someone my Co-Owner on my server, and after about a month (Pretty long time actually) he started abusing players by placing silverfish blocks in peoples bases, teleporting them into lava, being invisible during PvP matches, etc. The most common reason staff will abuse their power is because of boredom. It is hard watching out constantly for people breaking the rules, and in a way griefers and such will save a person from the disease of power abusers. I think it probably gets boring for the staff of PMC to do this, so I thank you personally for keeping PMC a safe and friendly community and site!
5. Now this is one that I personally have found out gets really annoying for the staff and the players themselves, and it is: Don't be AFK on your server too long! If you are going to be AFK for an extended amount of time, then just leave your server and come back later. I was AFK once for 15 minutes (Writing this blog) and when I switched to Minecraft, the members were really getting frustrated with me, because they kept trying to get my attention but I was, in a way, ignoring them. Even the other staff were getting mad! Another way to solve this, however, is too either use the command "/vanish" This command comes with the plugin "Essentials" so just about every bukkit server has it. Your name will disappear from the Tab key and people can't see your character. The downside however is that it will not say "<name> has left the game." so players will still try to reach you sometimes. I still recommend just leaving your server, though.
6. Presentation! I don't know! It seems like every tutorial like this has this in it!
7. Don't grief! Now this one can go under Tip #1, but it is so common I just have to put this here! The staff members must get either really bored, or have a twisted soul, because once on a server, I made a castle (Without world-edit or anything) that took me roughly 3 days, but when I got back it was blown up! The strange thing is, it was protected and the server has TNT turned off for the default players, and only the admins can build and use TNT... When I asked, though, the staff was honest enough to say it was them and they said they were sorry. They said that they thought they could roll it back with BigBrother or a plugin along that line, but they didn't know the owner took the plugin off! Although I was still really angry at them...
Now before I conclude this blog I want to say thanks again to the staff of PMC, and the staff on my server for not abusing your powers (Hopefully)!
Well guys that is it for this blog! I hope you guys enjoyed reading and if you like then don't forget to diamond, and I hope server staff will read this and give some thought before doing any of this to their players! If I missed something or you want to give some feedback, then post a comment!
