WARNING! YOU MAY NOT UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING (redstone) PHILOSOPHY!
There are three types of "redstone contraptions". One is actual redstone computers, which behave almost like the computers of today, but with lever, pressure pad, and button Operating Systems (OS). I would call them "softwired", as in software. Two is things like a TV with one save, where the redstone is only "hardwired" (as in hardware) to play that movie. Three is things like my elevator, which just take advantage of redstone properties like going through blocks, repeaters delaying, and pistons pushing Steve up stairs. I would call number three "nonwired"
My TV with multiple saves would be softwired.
My light switch would be hardwired.
My elevator would be nonwired.
I AM DONE CONFUSING YOU!!!

But back to the philosophy. I think that there are only two types of usages. Namely the circuits which uses multiple inputs and logics and the contraption which only can be turned on or of and do not use real logics, but mainly make use of timings. However subdividing is also subjective, so there is no real wrong or right philosophy.
Yup.
