Why is redstone so complex for some people and easy for others?

For me, redstone is pretty easy, but it took me a long time to get very good at it. To start off with, redstone is fairly complex for a newcomer. Even to me, I was completely and utterly confused by the idea of magical dust making things go 'boom'!

To start off with, let's get down to the basics that most Minecrafters know:

-Redstone is an ore found at about y 16. Usually in veins of 3-10

-Redstone ore drops 3-5 redstone dust, which is the basis of all redstone contraptions (duh)

-There are 7 basic components of redstone;

Redstone dust, redstone torches, redstone repeaters, pressure plates, buttons, levers and tripwires.

-All of the above items/blocks either give/create/transport redstone currents.

-Redstone dust is placed on the ground to carry redstone signals, but it only lasts 15 blocks

-Redstone repeaters are used to refresh the redstone signal after those 15 blocks, with a short delay

-Redstone torches are always in the "on" state, but can be turned off when the block it is on is given redstone power (via buttons/levers/pressure plates/redstone dust/repeaters etc)

-Levers, buttons, pressure plates and tripwires all give off a redstone signal when activated (being pressed, stepped on or walked through)

So that's the bare basics you need to know. Now we can take it a step up; mechanisms.

Redstone contraptions often focus around 3 main concepts; automating processes, transport, or killing mobs/players. Let's start with a very basic cobblestone generator:

Cobblestone-Generator-_jpg

As you can see, it isn't particularly big, but it can generate up to 13 blocks of cobblestone at any given time. To build it, you will need:

-Redstone dust (at least 4)

-Redstone repeaters (minimum 2)

-Regular (non-sticky) piston (minimum 1)

-Lava and water (1 of each)

-Redstone torch (1 min)

- A building material ( I've used glass, you can use any block that doesn't burn)

Let's start;

Find the area you want to build this generator, and consider this: Do I want smooth stone or cobblestone?

This isn't really that important unless you have a silk touch enchantment. If you want smooth stone, place the lava above the water flow, so it falls on top. If you want cobblestone, switch the two around.

If you have done it right, there should be some stone or cobblestone generating where the water and lava meet. This is what you want.

Now, place the piston behind where the cobblestone generates, facing the direction you want it to push the cobblestone. This piston will push the cobblestone out for the player to mine more easily.

Go behind the piston and place a repeater facing into it. This repeater will power it so it can push the cobblestone out.

Then place two redstone dust next two each other behind the repeater. This is the base of the clock. Now place repeater facing the piston, and a torch at the INPUT end. They should be next to each other. Connect with the last 2 redstone dust.

Now place down a lever and flick it on and off quickly. This starts the clock, pushing the cobblestone out!

That's it for now, I'll add more if there is demand for it!

Thanks for reading, and if you found this helpful, a diamond is much appreciated
