Everybody likes to role play. I mean, literally anything possible! You could be a police man, you could be a knight! Anything! Heck, you could make all of humanity fade into dust with a snap. (I wonder what I'm referring to.) So, here are some pointers to make the experience better for everyone!
Rule 1: Don't be invincible! Let yourself get hurt. If someone kills you, just create another character and keep going. Not a big deal.
Rule 2: Don't have some super powerful ability. Aka, DON'T BE OP! Examples: invincible forcefields. Telekinesis. Mind control. Insta kill.
Rule 3: Be fair. Don't be like, *then I did a sick back flip, kicked you in the head and you dyed.* which continues to my next rule.
Rule 4: Don't say what the other role player does. Example: *He does a sick back flip, falls, and dyes.*
Rule 5: Be considerate! If you don't let the other person make any big discussions it will just make it worse for everyone except you.
Rule 6: DON'T GO AROUND KILLING PEOPLE FOR NO REASON! Have a valid reason before hand.
Rule 7: Go according to the role play. Examples: If its medieval and you have a modern character, change it to medieval. Or just make a new one. If its modern and you have a medieval character, do the same.
Rule 8: Don't alter what the other player says! Examples: 'Player 1: *I walk down the street ignoring you.* Player 2: *You stop and decide to talk to me.*' Do. Not. Do this! It makes the experience worse for the other player.
Also, your not the main character! The whole role play doesn't revolve around you.
If you play according to these rules, everyone will be happy! Have fun!

On that note, it's also important to stay in one place at one time. Sometimes this can be excepted when the outcome of a conversation is set, though; you can participate in later events as though it had already happened, but pending the details. Participating in everything can be at best slightly bothersome to compile and at worst outright paradoxical.
