Golden tools are FASTER than Diamond

Diamond tools last LONGER than Golden tools

BUT

Diamond tools can be used WAY MORE MANY TIMES than the Gold tools.

So: It's not worth wasting coal on Gold ore. Just go ahead for diamond.
