Squall lines, we have all heard this term, but what exactly are they?
Squall line definition: A line of thunderstorms (sometimes severe) that form in front of or along a cold front. '
On a radar, they usually have the heaviest rain first, then it trails off slowly. The reason they are dangerous is because they are stronger than your normal thunderstorms as they are clusterd together. They can produce very high winds in excess of 100 mph (IN EXTREME CASES). The reason they can do that is the speed at which they move in tandem with their gust front. On the ground, they can generate a shelf cloud.

A derecho (Spanish for straight) derives its name from the straight line winds it generates. This is a very extreme case of a squall line. They are Squalls on steroids pretty much.
