The lava gurgled and belched sulfur into the air above it. I'd come to know the smell well in the past weeks throughout my excursions in this never ending cave. The diamond hanging above the pond of fire glittered and threw streams and spots around the cave walls. I could hear the skeletons and rotting bodies of previous miners who were subjected to cave-ins or giant spiders growling behind the makeshift stone wall I'd erected in this dead-end of a tunnel. Something about the cave didn't let anyone die completely. But the wall was holding. It was me and the lava. The lava called to me. Today was the day.

The first time I found the lava I had run out of food two days previous and was being chased by the foul monsters that haunted this place. I knew I'd join their ranks; growl into the darkness in search of "living" things to assimilate. I had no more energy in me when I felt the warmth and light of the pool on my face. I stumbled toward it, hoping to find my salvation, but found only boiling death.

Behind me, the tunnel crawled with spiders.

I knew there was nothing I could do. The tunnel behind me was lined with the crawling beasts, their fangs glistening with paralytic poison. I turned my back to the lava as the horde of spiders rushed toward me, a sea of hairy legs silently traversing the open space between us with mind-wrenching speed. Just before their raised fangs could touch me, I stepped backward onto the surface of the lava. The tension allowed me to get my other foot away from spiders before I shot below the surface. As the lava closed in on me I embraced the warmth. I felt something caress my legs. Then I felt agony, and I could think no more. I twisted and curled as my flesh was burned from my body. I felt the lava slough my muscles and tendons away from the bone and use my life as fuel.

My last twist threw me off my bed and onto the cold cobblestone next to it. I watched the skin grow back over the muscles on my arms and I crouched on all fours next to my smoking bed. I screamed for the first time since entering the cave.

But today was the day. I had finally collected enough iron and diamond to make a suit impenetrable by lava. There was something down there. Something that made this place what it was. A nightmare I could not wake from no matter how many times I rolled from my bed.
