Greetings, I am Huntario_Raptis, emperor of Zelka; a prosperous village on an Overworld Flatland preset.
When I first discovered villages back in Beta 1.8.1, I instantly fell in love with them. Realizing their imperfections, I cleaned them, placed torches inside buildings in an organized manor, fenced in crops, improved the stair-near-door system, stored crop yields, fixed doors, improved roads, built defensive barriers, and defended villages. I first used snow-golems to occupy villages in 1.8.1, and I liked the concept.
Upon seeing testificates in the Official Release 1.1, I first saw them the way most people see them; mindless, laughable squidwards. I didn't want to pillage though. .
But in 1.2, with the addition of new testificate artificial intelligence, I began to like villagers. They could walk around on their own, open doors, and take shelter at night and during storms; they seemed more... human to me. I saw them as innocent and defenseless; something to protect and befriend.
Surfing around the Minecraft community, I found that many players hate testificates. Many people see them as mindless, useless, and annoying. Many players hate villagers to a murderous point; slaughtering entire populations, stealing crops, and destroying homes.
Upon the implementation of trading in 1.3, I had a desire to trade with villagers, even if it was expensive. I greatly enjoy trading; I do my business with passion. Most players on the other hand, think that all trades are too expensive; this deepened their hatred for testificates, fueling murderous rampages with even more prejudice.
I am frankly disgusted by all this hatred. In my eyes, testificates, whom I sometimes call Zelkans, are innocent, and should be protected from players and zombies. No trade is impossible, some just take more time to complete.

In my private world, I build a wall around my selected village, place torches inside and outside of buildings, fence in and light up crop beds, place side-stairs on the pre-existing stairs on houses, extend/fix roads, make bridges if necessary, turn the buildings with fence on top in to guard towers, make churches look better, build/spawn iron golems, replace the double-slab in the blacksmith with a crafting table and anvil, replace the double-slabs in butcher shops with a furnace and crating table, and if I feel like it, use World Edit to change the composition of villages (example: changing regular wood in to spruce or jungle wood). I dawn my "God" armor and patrol the streets, killing zombies, healing zombified villagers, and protect the village population. When I want to, I conduct trades with them, legitimately.
This is how I believe villages and testificates should be treated. If you agree, please let me know so I know I am not alone.
