"Are you done yet?" a voice crackled through my radio, "Almost. I just have to get past these security features." I replied. "Well, try to hurry up. The guard's round are taking them this way soon." said the voice. The voice was my boss. We were attempting a heist on one of the most rich companies, DiaCo. They had made so much within the past year, DiaCo could buy pretty much anything in the shop. Right now, they were working on a secret technology that could update Minecraft and add anything to the game. This was a technology we could use. My boss has a client working at DiaCo, and that's how we got this piece of information. My raio crackled again, this time saying, " Be out in five minutes. The vault is to your right." And the radio was silent after that. Now it was up to me to complete this heist.
Perhaps I hadn't been thinking coherently when I had agreed to this mission, but it was a bit too late to withdraw now. I glanced at my LED watch; one minute had passed... ah, there it was, the vault door. I gaped when I saw the security guard sound asleep in a chair beside it and the great metal door stood open. Scarcely daring to believe the streak of luck, I crept into the room beyond and drew a long breath at what I saw.
The interior of the chamber was not a vault at all, but rather a small, cramped laboratory, complete with long metal tables and thousands of test tubes sitting in clusters everywhere. In the far north corner a massive case of glass lay on the floor, and as I peered through the top, my heartbeat began to gain speed- for at long last, here was what we had been seeking.
Three minutes left. The object was surprisingly small yet unmistakable, covered in metal spines that would send electrical currents racing through the blood of any who touched it without special gloves- a security measure. A single chip of gold winked at me from deep inside the bars of steel. "Hello, beautiful," I whispered, holding my breath as I tapped the code into the monitor on the left of the case: and smooth as clockwork, the lid slowly popped open.
I was grateful to Crowley, my boss, for giving me the gloves necessary for removing the object from its case, yet had we been under less pressure to escape in a certain time, I might have just taken the golden chip and left the rest. I carefully bound it in sheets of crystal cellophane, knowing that crystal offset the effects of such a powerful machine as this, and placed it into my backpack. Then, after one furtive glance in all directions, I scurried out of the vault and into the passage. One minute left.
The rounded doors at the end of the hall slipped open without a sound, and I grinned complacently to myself as I radioed into headquarters. "I got it, Boss," I said in a low voice. "Everything's under control."
A screech of static echoed over the radio, followed rapidly by a remote shrieks and shouts and then something like the popping of bullets. "Come in, Boss," I shouted into the mouthpiece. "What's going on?"
Crowley's voice drifted in to meet my ears; it faded in and out and was broken by spells of wrenching coughs. "The base has been raided, Monorai... I've been shot... get the chip to Agent Lea Holloway in..." The radio crackled once more and then died. Aghast, I slid the walkie-talkie into my slacks and climbed over a log in the dense woodland path. My boss was dead, our base had been infiltrated, I had no way of knowing how to locate this Lea Holloway person... and I was carrying one of the most valuable and coveted pieces of technology in the entire world on my back.
It was a recipe for perfect disaster.

"Yeah, that's it- I'd stake my reputation as one of the greatest computer scientists on it. Lea Holloway is not a real person at all; she is a hologram created by the agents of Nokoi Productions, Inc. as a decoy. It looks like that was the name of one of their employees some ten years ago, however... yes, here it is. 'Agent Lea Holloway was one of the first programmers for Japan's Nokoi Productions, Inc. She was the founder of a top-secret experiment that led to one of the greatest discoveries in computer programming history: the Golden Chip.' The article ends there. I'm certain this is what we're looking for, Jason," I said, my voice quivering with excitement as I closed the lid of my Macbook Pro. "If she really did invent the chip inside this machine, then she would be the ideal person to help us complete our mission."
"Aren't you forgetting something, Brandon? She's not a real person; she's a hologram," my co-worker retorted with disdainful dubiousness.
"She's a hologram of a real person. Lea Holloway does exist somewhere on this planet called Earth," I said scornfully. "Now get on the phone and book us a flight to Japan for tomorrow morning. I want this Golden Chip scanned and activated as soon as possible. DiaCo will be beside themselves when they realize their precious technology is in their rival's hands." I laughed at the image of those ridiculous morons in the DiaCo laboratory, searching for the Golden Chip, and I saw Jason's eyebrows shoot upward like arrows.
"I'll book the flight," he said, heading for the door, "but just remember, Brandon- we've taken a lot at stake for this mission, just so Crowley Enterprises can be the best and richest of all computer companies. I hope you remember that people and lives are always more important than fame and riches." And with that, Jason slammed the steel door behind him with force that made the research chamber shudder.
