˝Nothing Steve... I'm doing nothing.˝ That was the first lie
that my grandfather told me. I was playing in the park with my grand
dad, while my dad went to some job interview. I don't remember it
clearly, but those words i remember like it was yesterday. I was
playing when my grand dad started watching the old fort. He seemed to
be really interested. He went inside. It didn't really feel safe. I
followed him inside the fort, but when i got in he started yelling at
me. He was screaming at me and asking me why i followed him in there.
He definetly wasn't happy. That was the last day that my family was
normal. Nothing was ever the same after that. The next memory that
got imprinted in my memory is when i asked my dad about my
grandfather. He looked at me with sadness and regret. My dad was
always a happy man... he never cryed... he never looked sad... but
just like my his grandfather, he eventualy changed too. After my
question, he started explaining about his dad's obsession with the
war. People rarely talked about the war at the time. I heard some
things about the war, but nothing specific. For some reason i decided
to follow my grandfather's foot steps and started to read about the
war... Nothing... There was no book, no news article, no kind of any
information about the war, just wierd looks when i asked about it.
There was this one man that i met in the same park, where years ago
my whole family changed. The man was old and rude. He never sayed
hello or even sayed anything. I knew him for years... well i didn't
actually know him, but i saw him on the streets multiple times. He
was looking at the old fort that my grandfather became interested in.
I started talking to him but he didn't respond. Once i mentioned the
war he softened up. He went up to me and sayed that if i'm
interested, i should visit him at 12 Verno's street. I didn't want to
visit him... it was suspicious that he just invited me to his home,
but at the time he was my only lead. I needed to follow him if i
wanted to find out more. I left home at about 6 AM... I couldn't
sleep, so i decided to pack some of my investigation sheets. It
wasn't a lot, but it might help. He lived in the outskirts of the
town. I never went to visit that part of town. One of things that
they thought us in school is that we should never visit the outskirts
of the town. I never knew why, until i saw the walls. Old, rusted
concrete walls wrapped around an abandoned city, filled with plants,
but that's all that i caught with my eye at the time i was driving.
Not a lot of people live in this part of town, don't know why, never
cared... Until now. I pulled up on the side of the road, next to the
old mans house. He was standing at the porch, almost like he was
waiting for me. He kindly inited me inside. ˝You want some tea,
son?˝ he asked. I declined, but he didn't really take offence to
that. My mom would have been really insulted, but not him... He was
calm and relaxed. He became really nice after i got to know him. He
went to the basement and brought back news articles, books, his
research... everything he had. It was a lot of research. A couple of
articles cought my eye. The articles mentioned the soldiers that
fought for the lives of our people. The old man told me that the city

i saw on my way to his house, was the old part of town. He probably
lived there... The news articles were dated 1934. That would probably
indicate that my grandfather and my dad lived there. Some of my
research was wrong... Some was right. One thing is for sure though.
Nobody knows who started it. The old man sayed that he left the town
before it began to rot. He was a witness to the destruction of the
town, but he still doesn't know what caused the soldiers to start
shooting. After some time, he didn't have a whole lot of information
left. He had some details. One of the peculiar things is that there
are new patrols around the old city. They seem to be keeping the
walls from collapsing. Another one of the wierder details is that
someone appears to be living in the city. The old man occasionaly
checks the wall if there's anything going on. On some nights though,
he claims that he sees a sillhouette of a man sneaking inside the
town. I couldn't really trust him, but at the same time he didn't
have any reason to lie and i don't have much of a choice... I need to
trust him. I asked if i could stay at his house for some time to find
the person sneaking into the town. He had a spare room. It hasn't
been looked after for some time now. By the looks of it, i would say
that it hasn't been cleaned. It'll probably do, but this is not the
place to sleep in. I simply can't fall asleep. I got bored so i
startedlooking at the window, when i saw a person sneaking through
the holes and cracks in the wall. I quickly got up, ran downstairs
and went outside. I followed him all the way through the walls. I
could tell that the person was a man. But that was as much as i could
tell. There wasn't a lot of lighting in the city. Of course there
wasn't. I tried to light my path, but i couldn't find anything to do
that with. I thought that i could follow the man i was following and
the light that his torch was emitting from it. The plan was good,
until the i lost the light. The only thing that i remember after that
is a loud sound, a light and a horrible pain in the shoulder. The
asshole shot a bullet! The same bullet that pierced my shoulder! I
was about to run, when he came up to me and to my surprise he hit me
in the head with a bat instead of putting a bullet in my head like i
would in his shoes. He didn't leave me to die in the rotting town
too. It was... strange, the only word that i can use. Strange. I woke
up in the morning. Of course since i took my research with me by the
time i woke up, my research was gone. It wasn't really a surprise. It
was more or less expected. The bullet, luckly, went clean through. It
was still paintful, but not as paintful when the bullet went through
me. Cleaning my wound with the water from the city wouldn't be smart.
I would leave at the hole that i came into the city, but right as i
was walking to the exit i saw a group of soldiers. It looked like
they were patroling the area. They almost saw me. I had to get out,
so i tried climbing the wall. I was able to climb over the wall. I
had to climb a truck to get over the wall at first. I took my car and
drove back to my parents house. An old car was parked in the garage.
We never got any visitors. Even when we did, it was usually people
that my dad worked with. Not this time though. It looked like nobody
was inside, until i heared people talking upstairs. I slowly walked
up to my dads room. ˝Look... Look! This is all the research i found.
This will shorten our search for years!˝ ˝You mean YOUR search. I'm
interested in this as much as you are, but shooting someone? Really!?
Your just as bad as the idots who started the war!˝ Those were the
last words before my head filled with anger. My dad and someone else
were talking. Of course... How could i have not noticed! My own
grandfather! I stepped inside the room, ready to kill my own flesh
and blood. My grandfather became pale with fear when he saw me.
˝Thats the guy! That's the guy i shot!˝ ˝You shot steve?! What's
wrong with you dad?!˝ ˝Steve? Who's... My grandson... Your so grown
up! I'm so...˝ ˝Save it. Give me my research back... NOW!˝ He
dragged me out of the room. He told me about what he found and what
he saw. His stories were interesting, but... I wanted the research
back. He sayed he can't do that, but he did give me something. He
gave me a book... The book explained how the world works, how the war
happened... It had every single bit of information that he needed...
But the last pages of the book were ripped out. He told me that the
research that i had would complete the book and complete the
understanding of the world. The book told me things. Once i touched
it... It was like all the secrets were in my head... I didn't need to
read it... I understood everything. The book told me about some kind
of ˝Respawn System˝. The theory describes how every human and
creature, once they die, are born again in a seperate world, where
they live their life as a different person. It also describes how
those people never remember their past life... Only sometimes in
dreams they remember certain details. It was incredible! My
grandfather also gave me some sort of device. He sayed that it tells
which person died and who was born. This was amazing. He told me what
he knew and i told me what i knew. He also told me that his city...
it's just a test bunny... This town was made so it could be
experimented on... There were cases where smaller towns would just
disappear... Marfa, Cooperstown, Stockbridge... Every single one of
those towns, one day they just... disappeared. There are people who
think it's just a coincidence, but everyone that ever lived in those
towns just disappeared too. How has nobody noticed that!? It's a
TOWN! I suddenly heard my dad screaming something from upstairs. I
couldn't make out what he was saying, so i went up to his room. He
tackled me and shouted ˝Get down!!!˝ I got up and went outside.
While i was walking i saw a plane... It was an army plane... It was
quite big for a normal military plane... ˝A plane that size
wouldn't fly around... unless... Bomb. Shit... RUN!!!˝ The item that
my grandfather gave me was going out of control... The last thing i
remember is waking up in a smaller grassy field. The book... The
things it told me... It was all true. I didn't have anything with me
when i woke up. No food, no machines and no book... The research...
all gone. It has been about 5 years since the incident, give or take
a few. The things that wonder over night are probably the things that
caused the rotting of the old town. It didn't matter now. Nothing
matters. I have been gathering supplies for survival. I was surprised
to see some sort of people. They weren't like me... but they were
kind. I was surprised that anyone even exists at this point. I'm
lossing hope that i'll ever find anyone of my kind ever again. I
guess i'll have to wait... either by finding out if the writer of the
book will exist in this timeline or by making the book myself... One
thing is for sure. I'll have to live a long time to get where
humanity was... where it's suppose to be. Every morning i wake up
with a hole in my memory. I don't know who i am or what my purpace
is. This is a note for me and for me only. Nobody else can see
this... This is who i am now... This is who we are.

The End
