PROLOGUE < -

Wake.

Jennes Melko snapped up from the hard floor of the ruined apartment, breathing in the dusty air of Nuk'Mol.


What?

Jennes scrambled to grab his sword, and swept it through the air at whoever might be standing over his bed.

Nobody.
The room was empty.
He sighed with relief and dropped the stone sword onto the ground.
Krik.
Jennes looked down only to see the sword vanish, particles surrounding it.

"Darn you, code!" Jennes yelled. "Now I need a new sword..."

Jennes trudged through the streets of Nuk'Mol, searching for the gleam of iron. He caught sight of a group of hooded people hurrying down an alley. Sneaking a glimpse, he could see them disappear through a manhole into the tunnels beneath. He shook his head. "Bounty hunters," he muttered. "They're everywhere these...days?"



Jennes slowed as two armored officers approached him. One was carrying posters, the other a tablet-like device. They both had a large S marked onto their chestplates. Jennes squinted to get a better look. That was unlike any armor he'd seen before. In fact, that armor shouldn't even have been in the game...



The second officer stopped and raised the device to Jennes. His eyes widened as he looked at the screen, then he began pulling out his weapon. He aimed at Jennes and was just about to fire when the first officer grabbed him.



"What're you doing, you idiot?"



"THAT'S HIM!"


"What do you mean, that's him? He doesn't look anything like the guy!"


"But he gives off the signal!"


"Apologies on my friend's behalf," the first officer said to Jennes. "Darn scanners glitch all the time."



The second officer pulled away from the first and put the blaster back in his belt, cursing under his breath.


"You're gonna get us killed one of these days," the first officer muttered as Jennes walked off, a bit shaken. He turned to see the first officer putting up a poster.



"WANTED. (NAME UNKNOWN) REWARD: 50000 UNITS. DEAD OR ALIVE."

*scritch*

Jennes lifted his boot from the ground.
Yes!
He lifted the iron ingots from the sand and started running home by a different path than he'd came, to avoid another run-in with the officers. When he got back, he dumped them on a crafting table and started to forge himself a sword.

"Thought you'd never get back."



Jennes looked up. Someone shifted their way into the room.


That's him.
The one from the poster.
"It took quite a while for me to find you."
He started backing away.
"What? Didn't you do the thing? You know, the Familiar?"

What is he talking about?
"What're you talking about?"
"Come on. Don't mess with me. You don't have to be afraid, we're the same."

"Same - same what?"

The guy shook his head and turned around. When he turned back, his eyes were emitting a white light that illuminated the dark room.

"We're both Herobrine."
