Hello everyone, today I've decided to write up a little guide for the classic survival mode.
This guide is pretty basic at this point, as it is the beginning of a new save. More advanced stuff will come in the future.

If this is perceived well and considered helpful I'll add much more in the future, so let me see some feedback!

When your journey begins, you find yourself dropped in the middle of a biome (usually the forest) with absolutely no items or armor. This will change however, with the help of a bit of mining and crafting.

The first step to getting anywhere in survival mode is to chop some wood. This will be used to create any form of tool/weapon, as well as crafting tables and other essential items. In other words, without wood you cant do a thing. But, luckily for us there is a 90% chance your in the forest with an abundance of trees.

Picturepng

After you've cut down a fair amount of trees, the next step is to make Wooden Planks. This isn't hard at all, and is done simply by opening up your inventory and dropping wooden blocks in any of the 4 slots.

Picturepng

Just as important as the Wooden Planks, are Sticks. These are very simple to make as well, and just drop 2 wood blocks (one on top of the other) into the slots in your inventory.

Picturepng

At this point it is necessary to make a Crafting Table. To do this, just fill all 4 spaces in your inventory crafting space with wood blocks. A crafting table is used to create everything we'll need from this point on, so be sure to keep one around!

The next order of business is to create some tools for your mining convenience. Drop your crafting table down (it doesn't matter where, as you can destroy it and pick it up again to use later) and right click it to begin crafting.
There are four basic tools in the game;
Pick: This is used to mine any/all blocks in the game. There are however some rules as to what picks can be used to mine what materials. They are as follows;

Wooden Pick: This is the first to come, and can be used to mine stone and coal. Nothing more.
Stone Pick: This is next in the lineup, and can be used to mine iron, as well as the ores stated above.
Iron Pick: This can be created after placing iron ore into a furnace, and smelting it down. This can mine all the
ores from above, on top of gold.
Gold Pick: One of the more sought after picks, and can be created after smelting it down the same as iron.
Can be used to mine all other ores as well as diamond.
Diamond Pick:
The best pick in the game, and also the hardest to make. The only way to mine obsidian is with
this pick.
Sword: Can be created in all materials available for picks, and vary in strength according to material. (Weakest
being wood and strongest being diamond)
Hoe: Can be created in all materials available for picks, and vary in strength according to material. (Weakest
being wood and strongest being diamond)
Axe: Can be created in all materials available for picks, and vary in strength according to material. (Weakest
being wood and strongest being diamond)
*Shovel: Shovels are used only for the faster clearing of dirt. Its a pretty useless tool, but to each his own i guess..
(I apologize for not taking screenshots with each recipe for the tools, my computer didn't seem to want to take them. They can however be found with a simple search on Google)

After you have crafted your tools, the next step is to begin mining! To begin, simply head out to a big hill and begin digging into the side. I got pretty lucky and found not only stone, but iron and coal as well.
Due to the fact that there were such useful ores within a single place, i decided to dig out an area and use it as my base of operations (home).
Pictures can explain this better then i can, so attached are so photos of how to construct your mine, as well as recipes for some useful items.

IMPORTANT TIPS

  • Never mine straight down. If your lucky enough to not fall into a lava pit and die, you'll come across something awesome (diamond), and then have no way back out. Always use the stair method i demonstrated above, as it allows for maximum area coverage and a safe return path
  • Remember to use chests! Even if you have room in your inventory, its never fun to die and lose every single thing you own
  • Sleep in a bed ASAP. If you die after sleeping in a bed, it works as a checkpoint and you'll return to your house. If not, your house is most likely gone forever
  • Don't get to fancy with your house. Sure, its nice to build something cool- but this is SURVIVAL mode. You'll need to move at some point or another, wasting time and materials on a home isn't necessary

Well, that brings this to tutorial to an end. Hopefully you guys find this useful, and while this was aimed at newer players, ill post more advanced stuff if this receives enough feedback and diamonds.

Happy Crafting!
