It's 2011
I'm 13 years old
My best friend is visiting
He's told me tales of a world like none other
A world of exploration and danger
A world of adventure
It sounds too good to be true...
But now he's here, and it's time to see this for myself.
The PC boots.
MINECRAFT
Displays across the poorly lit crappy laptop screen
We're in a forest
"They're just blocks?"
I say confused...
"They're just blocks"
He replies with a smile
"Go punch that tree"
He coaches me, as I'm essentially a virtual newborn in this world
With each hit, a sense of achievement and excitement change my expression of confusion to utter joy
"This is awesome!"
I say in an elated tone of voice.
They're Just Blocks though..... I think to myself
It's 2014
I'm 16 years old
"They're Just Blocks"
The others tease and taunt
This phrase is paired with slurs and obscenities
They're Just Blocks... my heart sinks
My mind wanders farther and farther from thoughts of blocks
Soon the notion of a world where everything is mine to explore and create is completely gone from my mind
"They're Just Blocks"
I tell myself as I turn my back on this love of mine
It's 2020
I'm 22 years old
I'm scrolling my game library
"What's that?"
My wife points at a block of grass
"I'll show you"
I say with a smile
My mind is flooded with memories of adventure, danger, creativity, and friendship
We're in a forest
"They're just blocks?"
My wife says speculatively...
"They're just blocks"
I smile
If you've read this far I wanna say thank you for taking the time to read my entry for the love poem contest. :)
[They're Just Blocks] - is a retelling of my journey through discovering Minecraft and turning my back on something I loved due to relentless bullying in high school. I urge people to stay true to themselves and never compromise something they love because someone treats them differently.
If you or someone you know is struggling with any form of bullying please know there are resources available.
