My eyes remain closed. I do not want to open them. No one can force me to.
There is a reason I am staying here, in a place where all I can see is shrouded darkness. I admit, I am afraid of what could be out there. Even in this moment of dark serenity, I feel something lurking beneath my skin. Fear can come without reason, without sight, without thought I think to myself.
"Well then, you should have a reason." a voice murmurs, just behind my left ear. Against my will, my eyes flutter open. At least I think they did. All around me there is darkness, nothing different from the scene behind my eyelids.
As my head turns back to see this odd speaker, I hear a sound, like the rustling as you turn pages in a book. At this moment, I feel a breeze whip across my neck.
Nothing is behind me. Weird.
I remove my hands from what must be the floor to see if I can feel whatever is behind me. My right hand knocks into stone. I wince in slight pain.
"It must be a wall," I murmur as I run both my hands over this wall. Wait. I think I just spoke, but I didn't hear anything. I feel sweat begin to build in my palms, behind my ears. I try to speak a few more times with no avail.
What is wrong with my hearing! I think rapidly. Oh gosh, I'm starting to panic. My heart is now speeding up, my teeth are chattering. This is due to the fact that I just realized I heard a stranger speak earlier in this place. That means something must be wrong with my ability to speak, to talk, to protest.
I try screeching "HELP!". Nothing. I begin screaming and sobbing, yet I hear no sound. A few minutes later, with my throat feeling hoarse from my silent cries, I cough soundlessly.
With the realization that I am now mute, I swing around backwards and jam my fist into the wall. I hear the stone wall make a small noise, unfortunately proving that I am not deaf. As my eyes begin to water, I slowly turn back around. My eyes meet something in less than instant. In the smallest moment, as I feel my mind being ripped to shreds, my body falling backwards, I see the stranger's glowing red eyes.
"You should think before you speak my darling, or you might not like the way things end" are the last words I hear as I swiftly fall into true darkness.
