I caught a mantis in our backyard and I named him Randall. I can feed him with the 30000 grasshoppers in our yard where I found him. I really like Randall but grasshoppers are really hard to catch and idk if I can stand putting them to their deaths in his jar :( but this could be the first time I actually have a chance to care for a bug. I've always been interested in them :>

I had pillbugs once.

They stayed alive for an entire week before curling into little balls and dying because I forgot to water them.

They were really cool. One was silver gray and the other had yellow splots.

Mantises are really cool to keep, but you need to know a bit more to take care of them. they need a container with good airflow that is at least 2-3 times as tall as they are long and a ceiling they can stand on, since they hang upside-down to molt and that one does not seem to be a fully grown adult. They should have long sticks to climb on and reach the ceiling and the ground should be covered in a layer of dirt or something like the coconut husk fibers you'd use for a reptile habitat to hold moisture in. If they don't have enough moisture when they molt, they can get stuck and die.

You need to mist their container with water from a spray bottle every other day or so. While you can feed them with grasshoppers, wild-caught grasshoppers are risky since they can have parasites that kill the mantis. Ideally, you should feed them flies or moths. If you leave lights shining on the walls on the outside of your house you should be able to catch moths easily a little after dark.

I had a tarantula once so I might know: Just grab a grasshopper with your bare hands as fast as you can when you see one obstructed by tall grass, it doesn't matter if you grab some grass when you catch them, just grab firmly (but not as much to crush the bug), and then manage to grab them from the back with two fingers. Then try to cut with your nails the legs, but only from the inverted knees, so they don't scape from their container and to give Randall some extra protein from the legs you didn't fully cut off ;)
