CHAPTER SIX

Wait. This was supposed to go to Oxford! Not the Faroe Islands!

“Why are we going to the Faroe Islands?! This is supposed to go to Oxford, Britain!” I yelled to the person steering the ship.

“The Faroe Islands asked us to drop off a bit of supplies and things, but we will be leaving shortly after. We are ordering everyone to leave the ship once we dock for safety measures!” His salty voice yelled back.

I walked away, however the other three met me halfway.

“Faroe Islands??” Calypso exclaimed, a bit of anger in his tone. “I remember those from History Class- I hope they are friendly. Most of the towns are just small villages.”

“Thanks for the history lesson, Nerd! But how are we supposed to get back?” Sorren commented.

“The captain told me that we are making a short stop, he is going to make everyone get off.” I echoed his words.

“Oh- that’s good at least! Hoping it is as short as it sounds..” Kaden’s words trailed off.

“I hope so as well.” I nodded.

It wasn’t long before we arrived. The ship we were all on trailed down a small river which gave a view of gorgeous, stunning mountains and plains. It was quite beautiful in all honesty, but I needed to get back to Oxford. Calypso, Kaden and Sorren stood on the front dock of the ship, pointing at animals, trees and all sorts of things that caught their eye. I stood by the loading dock- where I would be getting off.

The crew started to close the sails and open the platform, now unloading crates and other supplies onto the docks of the area. My friends and I walked off the ship, now standing in a circle formation for no apparent reason.

“So..” Calypso started.“Anything specific we should do?”

“I think we should try and visit one of the local towns! Might be a good pass time and a fun thing to do since we haven’t ever been here.” Kaden suggested.

“I like that idea.”

“We have appeased The Great Wyvern!” Sorren exclaimed, while the others giggled at his statement.

We trailed off into the nearest town, it seemed quite normal. A bakery, marketplace, a large library, people walking, all of that. Majority of the people spoke English, at least from what I could hear. Eventually, we came upon a large stone structure.. Its architecture was stunning however it seemed to be in ruins and abandoned.

“Get off me, Icho!” Someone squealed, sounded like a child.

“Fine, fine, wimp!” Another voice said back. “I got to go home though, Bye!”

“Bye, Icho!”

Two boys came running out from behind the ruins, one dashed behind us and the other stopped dead in front of Calypso.

“Uhm.. Hi!” The boy said.

“Hello there! Is everything alright?”

“Yes, me and my friend Icho here were just playing a game. It’s all good. My name is Zephyr! What is yours?”

“Calypso! And this is Wyvern, Sorren and Kaden.” He introduced us to the boy.

“Cool names.” He nodded. “Want to play a game perhaps?”

“No thank you, unfortunately we have to get back on our ship soon. We aren’t from here if you can’t see already.” I explained.

“Ahh… understandable! No one really visits here very much.” The boy shrugged.

“Oh. Well I think the surroundings are very beautiful. I am quite surprised by how many people are not here.”

“I think it is quite a beautiful country as well, I grew up here, so how could I not?” Icho said with a chuckle.

I shrugged in reply as well. My mind trailed to when our ship would be leaving but I pushed away the thought, knowing we had a good chunk of time before we needed to head back.

“Say.. could you show us around a bit?!” Calypso chimed in.

“I would be happy to! Follow me, I’ll take you to my village first and- well I don’t know where.” Icho said, a bit of an accent I didn’t know coming through.

The boy took us down a stone pathway, it was covered in all different plates of stone. They were different sizes, shapes, shades of gray, it was quite pretty and artistic one would say. We were guided to a small building, it seemed very old- but not in a way that was gross or weird, but actually beautiful and historic. It appealed to the eye, at least for me. He took us inside and a warm aroma filled my nose, I looked around and before I could say anything, a woman came from behind the counter and picked up Icho.

“Chico!” The woman exclaimed happily. “I was wondering where you were.”

“I was playing with my friends! I told you before I left. We weren’t far, I just went to the ruins outside of town.” He explained, reassuring her of where he had been.

“Ahh.. now I remember! Who are they? I haven’t seen them around here before.” She gestured to us with her hand as she put Icho down gently.

“I met them at the ruins, they are from Britain and waiting for their ship to leave.” He said as the woman nodded.

“Are you boys hungry?” She asked us. I, finally, now realized where we were. A bakery. Just like the bakery back in Oxford, but this had some things displayed that I had never seen. This would be interesting.

“YES!” Kaden exclaimed from behind us.

“Then let me get you some food! I own a bakery for a reason, you know?” She chuckled at us and gave us a warm smile. She walked behind the counter and ducked down, digging through something I couldn’t see behind the glossy metal panel. Abruptly, moments later, she appeared once more with a small weaved basket in hand.

“Alright here we go!” She handed each of us something different, I tipped my head at mine. “I’m not going to tell you what it is, I’ll see if you can guess. It’s a bit more your style.” She explained.

“Thank you.” I said and then took a bite of what was in my hands. Icho clearly knew what each of us had, he was bouncing up and down on his toes.

What I had eaten was bread.. It was soft, light and then came a pungent aftertaste I recognized.

“Sourdough bread?” I said.

“Yep!” She nodded. “It’s not too traditional here but I thought you might like it. Glad you recognized it as I had hoped.” I shrugged at her response and continued eating.

Kaden, Sorren, and Calypso had all guessed what they had and gotten it correct, I was quite surprised Sorren had gotten it. Wonder what food he ate back in Australia. I pushed the thought aside.

It wasn’t long before all four of us had finished, then Calypso perked up with a question for Icho’s Mother.

“What else is there to see around here?”

“The marketplace, docks, historical buildings, art, quite a bit of attractive things!” She replied.

“Oh.. can we see the marketplace?” His eyes lit up.

“Sure! However, I must stay here and tend to anyone who decides to come in. Icho can show you thought, he knows the way with his eyes closed.. I wonder why.” She turned to him with a smirk and a questionable expression.
“No reason!” He whined with a giggle. “Come on! I’ll show you, follow me.” The boy dashed out the doors of the bakery, guiding us down another intricately designed pathway. I looked down the entire time and didn’t pay much attention to the conversation that the others were having,I wasn’t that interested in whatever they were doing at the moment.

We soon arrived at a decently busy area, people had wooden stands set up with various products, pieces of art, goods and other things. Icho guided us to a stand that seemed to sell mostly leatherwork.

“Hey there, Icho!” The man behind the counter said. “What brings you here?”

“I met some new friends! I decided to show them my favorite vendor..!” He grinned.

“Oh, you flatter me with your kind gestures, Icho. Can I get anything for ya?”

“Um…. Can I have that little horse sculpture?” Icho pointed to a small, wooden figure of a horse. It looked like a chess piece if anything, I liked it.

“Sure!” The man gently picked it up and handed it to the small boy. “I won’t charge anything, as usual.” He grinned.

“Yay! Thanks Marjun!” Icho bounced a bit. He was, oddly to me, quite childish. Icho waved goodbye and led us somewhere else.

As my friends and Icho started to talk, I honestly started to wonder why boys my age, or around my age, liked to talk so much? I mean.. What was the point? Nothing truly productive was happening, nor friendship bonding! We were already friends.. It honestly puzzled me. I turn my back for 5 seconds and there are now 5 chatterboxes going on repeat. Maybe it was how I was raised.. Who knew but as my mother always said when I was a child.

“Boys..” She would shake her head and give a playful smirk. I would giggle and then she would hug me.

Sunset was approaching quite quickly as we continued to walk the stone and dirt pathway around the seemingly large village that Icho, his friends and his mom lived in. After all we had seen today, I truly realized that this place, quite frankly in the middle of nowhere, was a beautiful and unique place, and that was something for me to say. I’d seen a lot of places over my short life, helping my mother with her work, her business and everything in between. I had been all over the place, from France to Europe to England to Germany, it felt like I had seen so much, yet in my mind, I knew there was more.

Calypso fell behind from the conversation and walked next to me, he stayed silent for a few minutes, seeming to enjoy the view just as I was. We had been friends, more like brothers for so long I could practically read his facial expressions to the exact. Then.. it seemed as if he remembered something. His expression turned to one of dread, I tried to think of what he was thinking about but he answered that question for me.

“Wyvern.. Um. The ship.”
