I found when I first started to play on Minecraft servers, that I often found servers that weren't that good, or that weren't that big. It took me quite a while to find good servers, even with the help of Planet Minecraft, and Minecraft Forums.


So what makes a good server?

• 
  A server without mods is likely to be boring quickly, or you get griefed.
  
• 
  Good servers usually use mods that stop griefing of any kind. (I've been to servers that allow griefing, trust me, don't go there)
  
• 
  Good server mods are usually ones that enhance game play, such as MobDisguise, MobArena, and MagicSpells.
  
• 
  Another sign of a good server, is a server that has mods, custom made for that server.
  
• 
  A sign of a more popular server, is one that has it's own website.
  

You may still end up at bad servers, using all of these tips for finding a better server, but it will help. Another sign of a good server is one that has lots of good reviews and replies to it's forum page.


Even with all of this, you may still find it hard to find good servers. So below I put a bunch of the servers that I go to and like.


Good Servers


I have put 7 servers, that I rated, and put in order according to my preference. However, all of these servers are good, and the order just applies to my personal preference.


MC Team Fortress 2

Mods: Custom Modded


This server is based on the Team Fortress 2 game. This is a pvp server. This server is good with lots of fun classes to play as, and lots of great maps. It includes capture the flag, sector control, and team deathmatch. The mods are well done, with fun things such as, rapid fire bows and invisibility(for the spy). The only problem is it lags sometimes when there are more people on.





Ghost Craft

Mods: Custom Modded


This server is based on the The Hidden: Source, popular mod. This is a pvp server. When the match starts one player is made the ghost, this player is turned invisible, and must kill the other players using some special equipment. The other players in turn can pick from several different classes to help them kill the ghost. They must follow small smoke particles and other hints as to the ghosts exact location.


Trouble in Mineville

Mods: Custom Modded


This server is based on the popular mod for Garry's Mod and Counter Strike: Source, Trouble in Terrorist Town. This is a pvp server. When the match starts players have one minute to gather weapons. After one minutes up, everyone is designated either innocent, traitor, or detective. The innocent and detective must figure out who the traitors are and kill them. The traitor must carefully eliminate the innocent and detective to win. The downside is that rounds can take a while after you've been killed.


MC Infected

Mods: Custom Modded


This server is based on the Call of Duty, zombie survival mode. This is a pvp server. When the match starts, you are given some equipment and weapons, depending on your rank. After a minute several of the players are chosen to be the mother zombie, and must infect all of the players, by killing them. Once a player is killed they turn into a zombie and must kill the other players.



Star Wars Craft

This server is based around star wars. This is a standard Minecraft server with the addon of Star Wars force powers, and lots of other interesting things. When you join the server you start as a padawan, and gradually you can buy new ranks. You can also buy force powers with your money, and accumulate lots of cool force powers for your disposal. This server also has one of the best capture the flag arenas I have seen. It's unique because they allow you to break and place blocks in the arena, allowing for really great gameplay. This is a very good server, the only reason it is lower down on my ranking, is because I have not been going to it as much recently. The downside is that it can be hard to make money.



MineZ

Mods: Custom Modded


This server is based on the mod for Arma 2, DayZ. This is a pvp/survival server. When you start a game, you are spawned somwhere in a massive world, and are given minimal supplies (a sword, water, a bandage, and a leather chestplate). You must then sneak around the world gathering better equipment, and supplies, while trying not to run into other players, or the really dangerous zombies. The downside is, if you die you start from scratch again.


Savage Realms

This server is a pvp/survival/towny server. You can build in safe town environments and then go on quests, to get money. Once you have enough money, you can buy yourself a pvp class, and a pve class. Each class has it's own special abilities at your disposal. This server also has great staff, and lots of people online most of the time. It can be laggy at times.
