A server log is a file that keeps a list of the time and date that a player used a command, said something in the chat or logged no/off. Some people take the Log for granted and use it to see what people are doing when they are not on the server, but the server log is the best defense a minecraft server has.
This is what an entry in the server log looks like.
2012-10-22 00:17:50 [INFO] hyperbeem issued server command: /warp oriental
So we have the date, the time, the player name and the command in that order (don't worry hyperbeem in my username).
As well as that it is also good for finding players who think they are by themselves and use commands that could endanger the server like this.

Ok so that looks like Davidm thought no one was on my server, then he unbanned Xvc0, whitelisted him adn then opped him, but like the player he is (No really! David doesn't know what a log is) I came on 2 minutes later and banned David for trying to unban a griefer and annoying player and Xvc0 again.
You see even if you are alone on a server there is always a defence, even though it won't seem like there is. See if you have access to the server log you have every single advantage over the player who was being offencive, griefing with commands or unbanning a player who was banned for a certain reason, but then again its not ment to syp on people's private messages.
As well look and see what thin player was banned for.

Using vanish doesn't stop the log from logging your commands and even in vanish TPO still works, that is how we found him doing this before I looked in the log file.

BTW we need to find out how random people are getting our server ip since this is private :/
