The Problem

Imagine you are in a public area. You look around and see a group of people having a conversation. You seem interested, so you go check it out. You listen in and hear, "Hur hur hur, your a fa**ot! Hey everyone, check out the gay guy, he's such a fa**ot!" Many people are laughing and you see a small man blushing, and filled with shame. With all of the people in the area laughing and pointing, what do you do?

This HAS to stop. This makes me SO angry, I have to take a moment to calm myself down. Can you believe that someone would treat another person this way? Just because they're different? This is so absurd. What is wrong with liking a person of the same sex? People are basically saying, "Let's make fun of this person because he thinks differently from everyone else." This is the same thing as racism and sexism. Gay people are extremely stereotyped. Most people see them as crotch-grabbing perverts. This is not true. Most gay people (there are exceptions that created the stereotype) are just like everyone else; they're funny, nice, and DON'T hit on every guy they see. If you found out your best friend in the whole world was gay, would you be mean? Would you no longer be friends just because he thought differently? I didn't think so. How do you live with yourself if you make fun of someone like this? There are plenty of stories all over the internet about kids who kill themselves because they were made fun of and bullied. Do you want to contribute to this? There is nothing wrong with being different. Most people keep their feelings a secret for this exact reason. In this world, there is a social step ladder. As soon as a person like this explains their feelings, he bumps down a few steps. The more the news spreads, the farther down the person falls. Soon, the person is a joke and is treated terribly as long as anyone remembers what he is. I'm not saying that becoming gay or expressing your feelings will make you the most unpopular person on the planet, but it's becoming like that really quickly. Stop this before it's not too late.

The Meaning of Fa**ot

You'd be suprised how many people use that (terrible, nasty, filthy, mean) word and don't know what it means. Here's the truth. The word fa**ot (I will refer to that word as "F") is slang for gay people. This word in school is mainly related to comparing two men's masculinity. The one with less masculinity is deemed a "F" and is ridiculed. If you look up the meaning of the word in a dictionary, two definitions will be avalible. The first is the slang word. The second, on the other hand, is much more interesting. The word, according to Wikipedia, means "a bundle of sticks for burning," referring to burning at the stake. This is related to the witch trials in colonial times, which is also treating people badly because they were different. On another note, religion is involved a lot in the ridicule of gay people. Many people claim that God hates gay people and will send them to hell, but if God loves us for who we are, then doesn't he love gay people as well? Sorry, I need to get away from religion, this isn't what I came to express.

What You Can Do To Help

The best way to help a situation like the one in the first paragraph is to calmly approach the group. You could say anything that takes the attention off of the victim. My personal favorite thing to say is "What's wrong with gay people anyway? They are just like everyone else, so what's the problem?" This is usually met with a face that looks something like the 'harp darp' rage face. You can say whatever you want to take the attention off of the victim and defend him at the same time. What you absolutely SHOULD NOT do is anything violent. Keep your temper in check and use non-violent methods to defend the victim. Words are the most fun to use anyway!
