the recipees look like a scam because they cost more then you can possibly get out of them e.g. diamonds with fortune III can only give up to.......oh wait........but still it's mostly gunna give you 3 (i juat checked apparently it's 4 but i've never gotten 4 from 1 vein)

The reason that they const more than they give you is to prevent duping. Unfortunately, the only way to make it so you can't just craft an ore and then fortune it is to make it cost more. So, I'd recommend only using it for building.
