This version only updates the world border every minute, as opposed to every moment in the higher energy alternative found here: https://www.planetminecraft.com/data-pack/center-a-worldborder-of-any-size-centered-at-the-average-player-location-in-the-game/
(I had to have 2 versions because uploading both in one made planetminecraft confused why there was no pack.mcmeta file)
Java 1.16.4 - 1.19+ (as long as command structure dosn’t change)
Very good for interesting proximity voice mod use while minimizing server lag from multiperson exploration.
Notes:
Clarification: This is not average location of a single person over time, it's the average location of multiple people on a server at any given moment
Susan does not follow into other dimensions. Call it teenage rebellion, but the nether does not abode for her if cool people like yourself are in the overworld.
Throw your compass if you get stuck outside the border. You will always spawn at Susan. If you don’t want your compass in the first slot, move it by replacing it with another item.
Start:
/function livelaugh:setsusan
Make sure you run this function at the y where you would be ok with players spawning. I find y=70 good so they don’t spawn in mountains but don’t die of fall damage.
& you’ll need to set your worldborder, this command will set it to 20 blocks:
/worldborder set 20
Recommendations:
I recommend using the Simple Voice Chat Mod
in conjunction with this, it’s very fun. Especially if you set it so nobody can see each other’s name, set instant respawn, and death messages are hidden (see below). Someone goes silent in a cave? Well maybe they died maybe they’re far away. It's also great fun to run in an only trench biome in my other datapack.

Additionally, any mod pack such as this (www.planetminecraft.com/data-pack/dungeon-now-loading-5-new-dungeons-5-new-bosses/) that naturally generates structures is fun for voice mod and multiplayer discovery. Aternos (free server hoster) is able to run these.
