Does my fish specifically return? That is, if a kind of tropical fish that is hard to find dies, will I have the same one again?

no sadly, it choses a random fish so if you wanted the same tropical fish again you would have to be lucky

Heh? Totems are always useful, since they are consumed upon use. Im sorry but i really feel like this is just NOT a worthwhile thing to do with a totem lol. Cool idea for a datapack but wayy to expensive. Maybe it would be cool if if you threw the fish item at a conduit it would ressurect the fish. That way players could use what they already have

most of the time late game players have raid farms and that just so happen to create extra unused totems. if you hate your pet fish enough that you don't feel like giving it another chance at life, you don't have to use a totem on it.
