While this isn't so much a mod, as it does not modify any files of the base game, it does add functionality. This is a datapack focused around making the game harder. I recently got back into Minecraft because I wanted to experience what the game had to offer since the last time I played back when it was fully released (1.0). I created a world with this specific intention. I would log into the game, then lock my difficulty at hard. I didn't want to play hardcore mode because I knew I would be dying eventually, but it still took a while for me to die, and they were due to some stupid things, mostly creepers that would sneak up on me while I was outside killing mobs during the night.

This quickly made the game boring for me. I didn't want to continue playing. So I looked up Forge only to find out that it still (even as of the time of posting this) wasn't updated for 1.13. Then I found out that it was possible to change the functionality of many elements already in the game without creating a mod. This led to the creation of my "Harder Mode" datapack.

Loosely based on tinesone's recent hardcore datapack, Harder Mode is a lighter approach to increasing the difficulty of Minecraft without going overboard, and without permadeath. The changes to mobs are as follows:
  • Zombies have double their follow range and no longer burn in daylight
  • Drowned have double their follow range
  • Skeletons will switch to swords when you come within 5 blocks of them (deals a lot more damage than bows)
  • Skeletons are also permanently given speed buff
  • Creepers will no longer damage blocks and have an increased fuse time, but their explosion radius is increased and they are always charged
  • Wither debuff now inflicts blindness
  • Wither skeletons are given iron swords instead of stone swords
  • Blaze spawn in pairs (i.e. for every one blaze that spawns, another will also spawn)

Along with those changes, there are a few loot table changes. They are as follows:
  • Pigs now drop one leather, or have a chance to drop 3 with looting enchant
  • Zombie and Creeper head drop rates are slightly increased

Another problem I had with the main game is that slime was pretty hard to obtain until I found a slime chunk. To mitigate this issue, rotten flesh can now be smelted for slime balls.

Lastly, there are now random events every 15 minutes. This was heavily inspired by tinesone. They are as follows:
  • Weak - A minute of Weakness 1 and Slowness 2
  • No Regen - Natural regeneration (from food) is disabled for 3 minutes.
  • Stronger Zombies - All zombies are given Resistance 1, Speed 2, and Strength 1 for 3 minutes
  • Gift of God - Player receives a golden apple :D
  • Invasion - Two zombies, name-tagged as "Knights" will spawn on both sides of the player. Knights are equipped with an iron sword, shield, chainmail boots and leggings, an iron chestplate, and diamond helmet. They are also given absorption buff the doubles their effective health points (EHP). They will disappear if killed or they will despawn after 3 minutes.
I wish anyone willing to try this datapack good luck. You'll need it.

Disclaimer: This datapack may not be compatible with others that modify mob types. It is, however, compatible with the "Mob Health Bar" datapack available here: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/customization/mob-health-bar-data-pack

I'm using this in a stream series and I love it! The events didn't work during the first stream - is there some command I need to run first? And if so, do I have to run it every time I load the world?
