This is not practical for singleplayer use, but if you need this to tell how many people are online in your multiplayer world, here it is. Just type in "/scoreboard objectives setdisplay sidebar playerlist" or if you want to use it inside of a command block to trigger something, the objective name is just playerlist. Hopefully this helps someone!
