+Z = SOUTH
-Z = NORTH
+X = EAST
-X = WEST
You still, though, have to take the time to look at how the numbers are moving (+ or -), and which tag you are following (X or Z).
If you don't have at least those notes marked somewhere where you can look at them quickly, along with the coordinates in front of you on the screen, you might as well just toggle F3 and go from there.
